Annual Sisters Trip 2016
Well ,we made it through another long weekend together. This time we went to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We actually stayed in Paradise, PA at the Best Western Plus Revere Inn and Suites.
The hotel was a few miles out of town but that didn't matter. It was clean, quiet and a great place to stay. The price includes a complimentary breakfast which was stocked with great breakfast foods: eggs, sausage, bagels, donuts, pastries, waffles, fruit and more. We were full by the time we left.
The first day we arrived, on Friday, we were gifted, by Rhonda, a show called The Crooners at the American Music Theatre. It was FANTASTIC!! The stage was set up like a Tropicana night club back in the day. The talent of the folks performing was phenomenal. They performed the most popular and enduring songs from the
1920s through the 1950s, along with recent hits from today’s modern,
soulful musicians. A must see if you visit Lancaster.
The next day, Saturday, we headed out to explore. We wandered over to the Kitchen Kettle Village where there are over 40 quaint shops including The Jam and Relish Kitchen. Here the locals cook up homemade Pennsylvania Dutch sweets like jelly, jam and butter, fresh baked goods like pies and whoopie pies. They also have delicious canned goods like relish, salsa and pickles. FREE SAMPLES are everywhere. We were full by the time we left the kitchen. This is a stop you will have to make.
At the village, they offer buggy rides. We took the 30 minute ride which was $11 with a coupon. It was worth it because our buggy guide was an actual Amish man, Beniel, who was very informative about the farming community. We had a wonderful time asking questions and meeting people from England who road with us in the buggy. Watch the video, we talk about organic air. Lots of fun and worth every penny. 
That same afternoon we headed on over to the Strasburg Rail Road, a historic
operating railroad located directly across the street
from the Strasburg Railroad Museum. It runs lots of train rides in
vintage coaches, mostly with steam locomotives.
The rides are narrated but it was hard to hear with people talking but the views of Amish
farmlands were gorgeous. They also feature special
Thomas days for the youngsters. We sat in the dining car and drank some fresh lemonade and ice tea. Taking a trip on the
Strasburg Railroad is an experience not to be forgotten! Sunday, we hunted down some covered bridges. It's amazing how they build these bridges. Because they were build with solid wood, they were covered to provide protection from the weather, dramatically extending the life of the bridges. In the 1800's there were approximately 1500 covered bridges in PA, now there are a little more than 200 left. One of them we visited was closed because it was leaning a little to much. If you visit Lancaster, you must seek out a few of these beautiful bridges.
Right before it started pouring cats and dogs on Sunday afternoon, we ate our lunch at the good ole' Cracker Barrel. We had to wait so we headed out to sit in the rocking chairs. Not to long after, we were called to be seated. Our waitress was our age and she was a bit tired but she still had a sense of humor which is good when you are dealing with the Sassy Silver Sisters. Since it was raining, we decided it was a good time to go shopping. And shopping we did! There are a couple of huge outlet malls in Lancaster, the Tanger Outlets and Rockvale Outlets. We are all grandma's so we hit every children's clothing store there was. We did a lot of walking that afternoon, that's for certain. Good deals too.
Monday was our day to leave but we couldn't leave without hitting the Mount Hope Wine Gallery and Rumspringa Brewing Company. Kelly's husband likes different beer so she grabbed a couple of bottles with manly beer in them, that's what Jay called the beer, manly. Because they were stout and he wasn't really into those beer. Oh well, it's the thought that counts.
