Living in the Culpeper, Virginia area is always a treat to go to the historic downtown and choose from many restaurants. We decided to check out the 4 C's this time around on our monthly get-together.

The 4 C's is known for its Peruvian and South American cuisine but also serves your favorite sandwiches, burgers, pasta, breakfast dishes, and more.

The restaurant is situated right on Main Street with parking on the side of the road, which we do not recommend, it's a busy street during the lunch hour. We parked on the side of the building in a parking lot.

As we entered the building, it brought us back to that old dinner that we are all familiar with. We didn't know whether to just seat ourselves or wait, so we just sat at a large dining table. There was plenty of seating available at the time we arrived. Once we found our seat we waited on the only waiter that was available. They did add a couple of waiters around noon. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful to us four old gals. We had lots of questions and he was patient.

It took a while for our food to arrive, but it took us more than a few minutes to decide what to order. Our order arrives at 12:25pm which is 50 minutes after arriving.

Cathy ordered the Papa Rellena which is fresh mashed potatoes filled with sauteed beef rolled, seasoned potato flour deep fried, and served with salsa Criolla. She loved it enough to go back and order it again. She also said she would take Momma Sassy for their popular breakfast.

Rhonda ordered the chicken and cheese quesadilla with salad. The plate looked nice with the salad in the middle of the sliced quesadilla. It didn't come with sour cream, so she asked for it and he brought it right away. The quesadilla was cooked just right, not overdone. It was full of flavor.

Mom ordered the Philly steak and cheese sub. She asked for grilled onions and they were happy to oblige. It looked good but not overly full. She didn't complain.

I wanted to try one of their Peruvian dishes and ordered the Aji De Gallina chopped chicken mixed with spicy cream sauce, onions & pecans, served with rice & side salad. It was simply creamy with enough spiciness to give it that bight that I love. The pecans give it a bit of crunch and mix it with the rice to make a spectacular dish. A must-try if you happen to stop by for a meal.

We decided to try out their desserts. We could see in the dessert case they had apple pie, cinnamon rolls, maple pie, and coconut cream cake. We ordered the apple pie ala mode and the coconut cake. The waiter was confused and brought cinnamon roll ala mode. We did tell him that he brought out the wrong dessert but we decided not to waste it and kept the dish. He didn't offer to take it off the bill but we weren't going to be jerks and ask for it to be taken off. We shared the desserts among the four of us and thought they were delicious. The cake was moist and had just enough frosting with it covered in coconut.

The prices were reasonable with the most expensive dish at $14.95 but that was a steak dinner. Their breakfast is super cheap considering what you get. See the menus below for more details.

The Sangria Bowl will delight friends, family, and food-lovers with exciting flavors inspired by the Caribbean and South America. Neoclassical theatre vibes, an art deco-inspired sangria bar, a rooftop terrace, and a lively atmosphere frame an inviting exploration of the many delights from their kitchen. The owners are Puerto Rican and Chilean and invite you to enjoy fun and creative sangria, cocktails, and their small plates and taco menu.

Sister's Review:

CATHY I was wondering where this restaurant was located. It is in the old State Theater building. The old theater still has the ticket window. The halls are decorated with lights to add atmosphere. Signs are everywhere pointing the way. It is located on the 2nd floor but there is an elevator, so that is nice. Outdoor seating if you want but it was raining so we decided to stay in.

It was not busy so we had the place to ourselves!  The music makes the mood fun and the restaurant is decorated nicely. The waitress was attentive and took my joking very well.

We ordered samples of the sangria flavors. I preferred the pineapple flavor.

Food came quickly and warm. I had the pork taco. The serving is small but the flavor is very good!  I enjoyed it. The taco shell was a little too tough and greasy for me.

I asked the waitress if we need to make reservations for lunch on weekdays and she said not Mon-Thurs because their busy time is for dinner and weekends. If you want to secure your table, you should probably make a reservation though.

Overall, I enjoyed it. The prices are reasonable. Interesting place to have a meal.

Rhonda  I had the Strawberry Salad.  It was made with arugula and spinach and had some crumbled cheese as well which was not in the description.  It was a mild cheese.   It had lots of cut strawberries more than any salad I have ever had.  The salad came with a strawberry cream dressing.  It was pink in color and on the thick side.  The taste was a little tangy, mild not overpowering.  All in all, I thought the serving size was great and the flavor delicious.

Kelly The sangria is was I was looking forward to trying. We ordered a sample of four. The flavors were Lavendar Lemonade, Pineapple, Cherry Red Wine, and Strawberry. My favorite was the pineapple. The others weren't as flavorful as I had hoped. I ordered the Caribbean Wrap which featured Jerk chicken, lettuce, pineapple mango salsa, and black beans wrap. I did have a bit of a bite but was not overpowering. It was served with a delicious spring side salad with mixed greens, apples, and cheese. The serving size was just right for lunch. I'd order this dish again.

We decided we would try a couple of desserts and ordered the Tres Leche cake and the Cheese and Guava Empanada. The Tres Leche cake was sweet, moist, and spongy just like it should be. The empanada was a delicious surprise. The guava gave it the sweetness it needed because the cheese didn't have that much flavor and was a bit tough, assuming because it was deep-fried. The crust was crispy and flaky.

Star rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ out of 5 - We gave the restaurant 4 stars because we weren't all 100% pleased with the food. But that being said, we would give it another try because we loved the atmosphere and the staff was superb. If you live in the area, we recommend trying The Sangria Bowl out for a change.

Cathy made this cute video, check it out!

Restaurant Review - Craft and Crust Pizza Tavern Remington Virginia

  • Name of restaurant: Craft and Craft Pizza Tavern in Remington, Virginia

  • Date of visit: Thursday, April 21, 2022

    Star rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ out of 5

We recently had lunch together at the Craft and Crust Pizza Tavern located at 204 East Main Street, Remington, Virginia 22734. We arrived around 11:45 thinking we’d beat the lunch crowd. It's a fairly new restaurant and seems to have been widely accepted in the community by their Facebook page. They serve brick oven pizza, along with antipasti, subs, salads, and a kid's menu. Also, local craft beer.

When we arrived at the location, the parking was readily available on the street. I’m sure on the weekends that would be a problem as the parking on the street is minimal. They have outdoor seating in the front of the building for those who want to enjoy eating outside. CCPT takes up one-half of the building and I believe they are working on adding an extra dining area in the vacant half of the building.

We walked in and noticed their special of the day board. We weren’t sure whether to wait for a waitress to be seated so we just grabbed a table. The dining area is roomy with farm art on the walls. They had a few TVs on the wall for those sports TV watchers. The kitchen is open in the back and in the front window area is where they have karaoke and live music on the weekends. They had music playing and was not too loud, which is a nice change because most restaurants have music playing and you can hardly hear yourself talk much less others in your party.

After waiting a few minutes, the waitress came to our table, gave us paper menus, and took our drink order. I wasn't too thrilled with the way the menus looked, maybe they can put them in a plastic sleeve to make them look more presentable, especially if they make changes often. She offered us the weekly special which was a personal pan cheese or pepperoni pizza along with a side salad.

We noticed right away the special pizzas named after the local towns in Fauquier County. What a fabulous tribute to the area.

They do offer gluten-free pizza for an extra charge. The prices for a pizza run from $16 on up. The sandwiches are under $15. The kid's menu items seem pricey at $8. I'm sure if that includes a drink.

We waited for about 10-15 minutes for our food. Cathy decided on the Crispy Chicken Parmesan Sandwich with red sauce and Sidewinder Fries. Both were very tasty. She had never had those fries before and she really enjoyed them.

Rhonda chose the weekly special. A huge side salad came out first with lots of fresh veggies and Ken’s pouch dressing. The pizza was crispy on the edges with cheesy pepperoni goodness.

I decided on the C & C Smash Burger with fries. The burger was topped with cheddar cheese, onions, tomato, pickle, and their special sauce. It was a very good burger and I would have it again. The fries were sidewinder fries that reminded me of steak fries but in a curly fashion. They were meaty and with just the right amount of seasoning. The meal was more than enough, I couldn't eat all the fries, what a pity.

All in all, it was a good experience. You can check them out on Facebook or on their website. You can order online starting at 11am. It doesn't look like they have delivery but you can order and pick it up.

Restaurant Review of Grass Rootes in Culpeper Virginia

  • ***UPDATED 4/29/23***

  • Name of restaurant: Grass Rootes in Culpeper Virginia

  • Date of visit: April 23, 2021

    Star rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ out of 5

Grass Rootes is a farm-to-a-table dining experience in historic downtown Culpeper at the corner of East Davis Street and South East Street. According to their website, they are in the oldest commercial building in Culpeper and you can tell. You could be a little confused by the outside of the building as it touts the old-style hardware store it used to be once upon a time. They are open Wednesday through Saturday for lunch 11am-2:00pm and or dinner 5:30-9pm.

We parked around back in a lot behind the building. You can use the back stairs to go into the restaurant but we walked around the front of the building and used the main entrance. We arrived around 11:30am on a Friday and it wasn't busy, yet. When noon hit, the restaurant started filling up. Although it wasn't crowded, it was good to see these small restaurants feeding folks.

  • The decor is rustic with the original walls and beams showing off its beauty. Grass Rootes displays its name on the far wall as you walk in.

  • The dining area had tables and booths plus the large wall with the name of the restaurant had a bench along that wall with bright pillows for color and comfort. They also have outside seating out front of the building and on the deck in the back. We sat at a table for four. The restaurant was clean and tidy looking.

  • It was a bit chilly outside that day and it was also chilly in the building. They had the fireplace going but it didn't really keep the chill off. Another couple was seated there otherwise we would have asked for that table.

  • The bar was opened that very day because the Governor lifted the ban on sitting at the bar. There was a couple sitting there and a little while later another couple of folks went to the bar. They were so excited to be able to sit at the bar you could hear their excitement through the restaurant. Can you find the buffalo head hanging around?

  • The menu offers a wide variety of delicious and mouthwatering starters and main courses that will appeal to most people. Not sure if they have a children's menu because we didn't have children with us and I didn't notice an option on their menu. The price ranges for lunch from $7.50 - $14.00 and dinner up to $39.00.  They offer a wine list and specialty cocktails on their menu. The menu did not list desserts but they did offer it but we were too full to try them out.

  • The waitress was super sweet and attentive. They sent over a small loaf of homemade bread and butter while we decided on the menu. Once she came back to take our order, she spouted out all kinds of specials of the day which two of those Cathy and I choose to order.

Our food came out within 10-15 minutes which we thought was super fast for a full-service restaurant.

  • Cathy ordered the steak tacos with a side salad. They were made with cheese twills and blue tortilla shells, full of meat. Super tasty, tender, and messy. They give you cloth napkins but they were so messy that Cathy asked for extra paper napkins and she obliged. Cathy would order them again. The side salad was made with spring greens, carrots, cucumbers, onions, blue cheese & their house vinaigrette, tangy and delicious.

  • I ordered one of the specials of the day too, the Reuben sandwich. It was good, not soggy like some can be with sauerkraut too wet. The bread was toasted and crispy. Just enough meat and sauerkraut to make it a decent sandwich. I had the choice of fries or a side salad. I also ordered the salad and I could devour a big bowl of that salad. They offer it as a whole salad and you can add a protein for an extra cost.

  • Rhonda ordered the BLT with a side salad. It was abundantly full of bacon and layered with tomatoes and lettuce with mayonnaise on the side which is a nice touch. The bacon was crispy just the way she likes it.

  • They do have live music on occasion and supposedly they have had famous musicians pop in and play. Check them out on Facebook and their website

  • Stop by and try them out 195 East Davis Street, Culpeper, VA 22701  telephone 540.764.4229.

They do offer delivery within the town of Culpeper.

Our rating system is 1 - 5 stars.

    • 1 ⭐ = Poor. There’s nothing good about the restaurant. We won't be returning.
    • 2 ⭐ ⭐ = Okay. The restaurant has one or two good qualities. It might be a delicious dish, helpful staff, or an inviting atmosphere. Still, you have no interest in visiting again.

    • 5 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ = Extraordinary. Meets an elite standard by which you judge all other restaurants. The staff is always ready to help, the premises are extremely clean, the atmosphere is lovely, and the food is both delicious and beautifully presented.

  • We gave Grass Rootes ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ONLY because we were cold. We understand it's a big open and old building but we have to be honest. The food was wonderful and we would definitely be going back. We do recommend you try it out when you are in Culpeper.

Have you visited Grass Rootes? If so, we’d love to hear about your experience.

    Keep it sassy,
    Kelly
