A Tribute for our Mother’s 90th Birthday

January 3rd marks a very special occasion as we come together to celebrate the 90th birthday of our beloved mother, Mama Sassy. It is a milestone that is truly worth celebrating, as it is a testament to the strength, resilience, and love that she has embodied throughout her life. As we reflect on the incredible journey that our mother has taken, we are filled with gratitude for all the sacrifices she has made for our family.

Our mother has always been the heart and soul of our family. She has been the pillar of strength that has held us all together through the highs and lows of life. Her unwavering love and support have been our constant source of inspiration and motivation. We have watched her handle every challenge with grace and determination, and her faith in God has taught us the power of resilience and perseverance.

Our mother has also been the epitome of selflessness. She has always put the needs of her family above her own, never once complaining or seeking recognition for all that she does. She has been a source of love, comfort, and guidance, always there to listen and offer her wise words of advice. We are forever grateful for the sacrifices she has made to ensure that we have a happy and fulfilling life.

As we celebrate her 90th birthday, we are reminded of all the wonderful memories and moments that we have shared with our mother. From her delicious home-cooked meals, New England Boiled Dinner, and Whoopie Pies, to her warm hugs and infectious laughter, she has filled our lives with so much joy and love. Her kind and nurturing spirit has touched the lives of everyone she has met, and her legacy will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Born in a time of great change and turmoil, our mother witnessed the world go through significant events and transformations. She lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and countless other historical moments that shaped the world we know today. She experienced firsthand the struggles and hardships that came with those times, but also the strength and determination that allowed her to overcome them.

Our mother was born in a small town in Maine in the early 1930s, a time when life was much simpler and slower-paced. She often talks about her childhood, filled with memories of playing outside with her siblings and friends and going to the local schoolhouse. She recently told everyone that she truly lived off the grid growing up in Maine. ☺

As a young person, she always had a passion for sports and music. She excelled in basketball and even played on her high school team. She learned to play the guitar, the piano and enjoys singing. Working a job at a local soda counter, she loved being able to interact with customers and make their favorite drinks.

But her life took a dramatic turn when she made the decision to join the US Marine Corps. It was a bold move for a young woman at that time, but she was determined to serve her country and make a difference. She went through rigorous training and emerged as a strong and capable Marine.

Stationed in North Carolina, she was assigned to work as a staff office stenographer and recorded court material by shorthand. Shortly after arriving at Camp Legeune, she met and married our father.

As a USMC wife, she faced a different set of challenges. She had to adapt to a constantly changing lifestyle, moving from one place to another every few years. But she embraced this lifestyle and made the most of it. She fell in love with the culture, the weather, and the beauty of Hawaii, where our father was stationed for a couple years. She also had the opportunity to travel to different states and experience different cultures, which broadened her perspective on life. She made long-time friends wherever the USMC would take them.

While on his last assignment at Quantico Marine Corps Base, our father retired from the USMC and settled in Virginia. But we would have never guessed it would be their last stop together.

Throughout her life, she has endured unimaginable pain and heartache. She has experienced the loss of not one, but three husbands, each one leaving a void in her life that can never be filled. The first was our father, Walter, who was taken too soon by a massive heart attack in his early 40's.

The second was Dan, whom she met at our church. They were married for 7 years and he also died of heart disease. During their marriage, she suffered the devastating loss of her 4th child, Terry (who had just graduated from high school) in a car accident.

After being a widow for 19 years, she married Clint, she called him Sweetie☺. They were married for 17 years.

Each time, she was left to pick up the pieces and carry on, holding on to her faith. She has learned to cherish the memories of her loved ones and find solace in the fact that they will always hold a special place in her heart. Her strength and resilience in the face of such tragedy is a testament to her steadfast spirit and love for those she has lost. Despite the hardships she has faced, she continues to carry on, a true example of courage and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Our mother also experienced the joys and challenges of motherhood, raising six children with love, patience, and strength. She always put her family first and made sure we had everything we needed to succeed. She taught us important values like kindness, compassion, and resilience, and we are forever grateful for the strong foundation she gave us.

As she entered her later years, our mother continued to embrace life with enthusiasm and grace. She opened a business, traveled, learned new skills, and stayed active in her community and church.

Her love for crocheting knows no bounds, as she has tirelessly created numerous hats for the homeless, and those in need. Currently, she’s embarked on a new endeavor, making baby blankets for a local pregnancy center.

Now, as we gather to celebrate her 90th birthday, we are in awe of all that our mother has accomplished and the impact she has had on our lives and the lives of so many others. Her unwavering love, support, and wisdom have shaped us into the people we are today, and we are forever grateful for her presence in our lives.

Happy 90th birthday, Mom – you are truly an incredible woman and the best mother anyone could ask for. May your life continue to be filled with love, happiness, and blessings. We love you more than words can express.

Your sassy daughters,
Cathy, Rhonda and Kelly

Memorial Day Tribute

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in ChicagoNew York, and Washington, D.C.

GY SGT Walter I. Arnold

We would like to introduce you to our father GY SGT Walter I. Arnold. He was a U.S. Marine and a very proud one at that, "OORAH"
He served for 19 years and in two wars, Korean and Vietnam. He was wounded in Korea and received a purple heart.

After coming home from Korea, our grandmother said he was never the same. It goes to show you that those that serve in the Armed Forces have to deal with not only the physical aspects but also the mental. War is tough on the soldiers and the families. God bless them 💗

Presented with Purple Heart

His last post was Quantico, Virginia and after serving 19 years he retired, set up a small farm in Fauquier County VA with our mom and their six kids.

His life was short-lived, as he passed away not too long after retiring. He had a massive heart attack due to Arteriosclerosis, hardening of the arteries. Stress was the major factor in this and the US Government declared him to be a casualty of war.

of our Father...

Cathy ~  I went to work with Dad one day on the base at Quantico, VA. They gave a Private the riot act for not saluting properly. I was young so I thought wow that was rough. Then after the Private left the office, they laughed about it.

I will always remember him practicing with his guns. He answered the many questions I had about what he was doing. He allowed us to shoot if we wanted to.

Rhonda ~ I remember Dad teaching our dog to attack if someone grabbed us.  This was in North Carolina. Dad would grab one of us and get the dog to grab him by the arm.  He was training the dog to protect us for the times he would be shipped overseas.

Kelly ~ I remember the horse he bought from someone, his name was Prince, he was fairly scrawny for being a morgan horse but Dad did his best to plump him up. He ended up being a beautiful horse and even made it into a parade. I think he loved his little farmette because we ended up with pigs, chickens and at one point he bought chinchillas.

Our mom and other family members have told us some funny stories about our dad. He had a great sense of humor and sometimes a foul mouth.

We'd like to mention those in our family & extended family that have served: Vergie Thompson (Marine), Tess Arnold (National Guard), Travis Arnold (Navy), Jim Flickinger (Army), Shawn Wongkachonkitti (Army), John Curran ( Marine) and his four sons, John Jr., Michael, Patrick, and Matthew served also in the Marines and Navy, Alton Duplisea (Marine).

We would love to honor those servicemen and women that you have in your family. Please comment with their names below in the comment box. Share this blog 😀

Mom and Dad

To those in uniform serving today and to those who have served in the past, we honor you today and every day.

Stay safe and healthy,
