Slow Cooker Recipes from Main Dish to Dessert

Unlock a world of culinary wonders with an array of tantalizing slow cooker recipes, taking you from mouthwatering main dishes to delectable desserts.

Slow cooker recipes have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. They offer a convenient and effortless way to prepare delicious meals without spending hours in the kitchen. With a slow cooker, you can simply throw in your ingredients and let them simmer and cook for hours, resulting in tender and flavorful dishes.

One of the greatest benefits of using a slow cooker is the ease of preparation. Most recipes require minimal prep time, as you only need to chop and prepare the ingredients before placing them in the slow cooker. This not only saves time but also reduces the amount of dirty dishes and kitchen mess.

Another advantage of slow cooker recipes is the ability to cook large quantities of food at once. This makes them perfect for families or for meal prepping for the week. You can easily double or triple a recipe and have leftovers for days, making it a cost-effective option for busy households.

Slow cookers are also a great way to create healthy meals. Because the ingredients are cooked at a low temperature for a longer period of time, they retain more nutrients and flavors compared to traditional cooking methods. Additionally, slow cookers allow for lean cuts of meat to become tender and juicy, making it easier to incorporate protein into your diet.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to slow cooker recipes. From soups and stews to casseroles and desserts, there is a recipe for every taste and dietary restriction. You can find recipes that cater to specific diets such as vegetarian, gluten-free, and low-sodium, making it a versatile tool for anyone looking to improve their eating habits.

One of the most popular slow cooker recipes is the classic pot roast. This dish typically includes beef, vegetables, and seasonings, all cooked together in the slow cooker for several hours until the meat is fall-apart tender. It's a hearty and comforting meal that requires minimal effort and is perfect for a chilly evening.

A Guide to Deep Cleaning Your Computer for Seniors

Got a cluttered computer that's slowing you down? As we age, our bodies and minds may not be as agile as they once were. Along with physical changes, our ability to navigate technology can also become more challenging. For older folks who may not have grown up with computers, using and maintaining one can be a daunting task. This is where computer cleanup for us (older generation) becomes essential. With regular computer cleanup, seniors can not only keep their devices running smoothly but also improve their overall technology skills.

First and foremost, computer cleanup involves removing unnecessary and potentially harmful files and programs from the computer. This is important because as we use our computers, they accumulate temporary files, cookies, and other data that can slow down the system. For people like me, who may not be as familiar with these terms, a computer cleanup can be a great opportunity to learn about how their computer works and what they can do to improve its performance.

In addition to removing unwanted files, computer cleanup also involves updating software and operating systems. You may not be aware of the importance of updates, but this is a crucial step in keeping your computer secure. Outdated software and operating systems can make a computer vulnerable to viruses and malware, which can be especially harmful to older individuals who may not have the knowledge or resources to handle such issues.

Moreover, computer cleanup can also include organizing and decluttering the desktop and files. You may have trouble finding documents or navigating through folders, this can greatly improve your overall experience and make using the computer less overwhelming.

Another aspect of computer cleanup is ensuring that your computer is physically clean. Dust and debris can build up inside the computer, causing it to overheat and potentially damaging its components. This is an important service that can greatly extend the life of your device.

Keeping your computer clean and well-maintained is essential for optimal performance and longevity. Over time, files and programs can accumulate, taking up valuable space and slowing down your system. In this article, we will discuss some simple and effective ways to clean up your computer and keep it running smoothly. Whether you are a novice or a tech-savvy individual, these tips will help you clear out clutter, boost speed, and improve overall functionality.

Say goodbye to digital chaos with these easy tips for cleaning up your computer.

How to clean your screen

Make sure to unplug your computer for cleaning. Wipe down your computer screen with a dry cloth to remove excess dust. Then, dampen the cloth with water—make sure the cloth isn’t too wet, as any dripping liquid may damage the internal parts of your computer.

Keep your keyboard spotless

Crumbs, dust, and sticking keys happen to the best of us. If you ever eat while working on your computer, your keyboard will likely need regular cleaning. Using a can of compressed air, clear any crumbs from the surface of your keys. Once there’s no more visible debris, start cleaning with a clean cloth, isopropyl alcohol, and cotton swabs. Dampen your cloth with alcohol and run it over the full keyboard before using cotton swabs to clean between the keys. Be careful not to soak your cleaning supplies in alcohol so it doesn’t seep into your computer and damage internal parts.

Don’t forget the mouse

If you use a desktop computer or a laptop with an external mouse, don’t skip this step. There’s no need to clean the inside of your mouse, but regular use may make the exterior sticky or smudged. Unplug or remove the batteries before using your clean cloth and a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to wipe clean but be careful to not get any liquid inside. If it still looks worn after thoroughly cleaning, it might be time for a new computer mouse.

Step 2: Organized Your Files

The first step in cleaning up your computer is to organize your files. Start by creating folders for different categories such as work, personal, and entertainment. This will help you find your files easily and reduce clutter on your desktop. Also, delete any unnecessary files and programs that you no longer need. This will free up space on your hard drive and make your computer run faster.

Step 3: Uninstall Unused Programs

Over time, we tend to accumulate a lot of programs on our computers that we no longer use. These programs take up valuable space on our hard drives and can also slow down our computer's performance. Take some time to go through your list of installed programs and uninstall the ones you no longer need. This will not only free up space but also reduce the number of background processes running on your computer, making it run faster.

Step 4: Clean up Your Desktop/laptop

A cluttered desktop/laptop not only looks messy but can also slow down your computer. Each icon on your computer takes up memory and processing power, which can affect your computer's performance. It is best to keep your desktop clean and organized with only the essential icons. You can also create folders on your desktop to categorize your files and keep them organized.

Every time we browse the internet, our computer stores temporary files and cookies to help websites load faster. However, over time, these files can accumulate and take up a considerable amount of space on our hard drive. It is essential to regularly clear your cache and temporary files to free up space and improve your computer's performance. You can do this by going to your browser's settings and clearing your browsing history.

Step 6: Run a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter

Windows has built-in tools that can help you clean up your computer and improve its performance. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you delete temporary files, system files, and other unnecessary items from your computer. The Disk Defragmenter tool, on the other hand, rearranges the files on your hard drive to make them more organized and easier to access. Running these tools regularly can help improve your computer's speed and performance. Just type in Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter in the search bar and it will take you through the procedures.

Step 7: Update Your Software and Operating System

It is crucial to keep your software and operating system up to date. Software updates often contain bug fixes and performance enhancements that can help improve your computer's speed and stability. Similarly, updating your operating system ensures that your computer is equipped with the latest security patches and features.

In conclusion, cleaning up your computer is essential to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. By following these simple steps, you can organize your files, free up space, and improve your computer's performance. It is recommended to perform these steps regularly to maintain a clutter-free and optimized computer. Remember, a clean computer is a happy computer!

Do you have trouble with your computer? How do you solve the issues, do you ask a friend/family member or take it to a computer shop? We'd love to hear from you. We hope this helps you as you navigate this crazy computer world we live in.

Let's Talk About the Thyroid

January is known as Thyroid Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to the importance of thyroid health and educate people about thyroid-related disorders.

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and producing hormones that affect almost every cell in the body. Thyroid disorders occur when the thyroid gland is either overactive or underactive, causing a range of symptoms that can significantly impact a person's quality of life. Common thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid nodules. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and depression. Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is a condition where the thyroid gland produces an excess of hormones, resulting in symptoms like weight loss, rapid heart rate, and anxiety. Thyroid nodules are lumps or growths on the thyroid gland, which can be either benign or cancerous. These disorders can affect people of all ages, but they are more common in women and those over the age of 60. While the exact causes of thyroid disorders are not fully understood, genetics, autoimmune diseases, and iodine deficiency are believed to play a role. It is crucial to raise awareness about thyroid health because thyroid disorders can often go undiagnosed, leading to long-term health complications. During Thyroid Awareness Month, organizations and healthcare professionals aim to spread awareness about the signs and symptoms of thyroid disorders, as well as the importance of early detection and treatment. By educating the public, we can improve the lives of those living with thyroid disorders and work towards better overall thyroid health for all.

I've been diagnosed with a hypothyroid and have been managing it for the past several years. It was a shocking diagnosis at first, but I have come to understand and accept my condition. For me, the most challenging aspect of hypothyroidism has been the weight gain, brain fog, and feeling sluggish.  Also I noticed my body temperature had dropped by a degree. However, with proper medication and lifestyle changes, I have been able to manage my symptoms and live a fulfilling life. With the support of my loved ones and a great doctor, I have been able to successfully manage my hypothyroidism and live a fulfilling life. I hope that by sharing my story, I can raise awareness about this condition and inspire others to take charge of their health and never give up on their journey to wellness.

How can you check your thyroid? Perform a thyroid neck check, stand in front of a mirror, and tilt your head back slightly. Take a sip of water and swallow. As you swallow, observe your neck for any protrusions or bumps that may appear. Next, gently run your fingers along the base of your neck, just above your collarbone. You should feel a small, soft bump known as the Adam's apple. If you notice any lumps or bumps that are not normally there, it could be a sign of an enlarged thyroid gland, also known as a goiter.

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck that may seem insignificant, but it plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of our bodies. Despite its small size, the thyroid has a major impact on various bodily functions, including metabolism, growth and development, body temperature regulation, and more.

The thyroid can have hundreds of possible symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms, I suggest you talk with your doctor.

Signs You May Have Hyperthyroidism | Page 8 | Things Health

Believe it or not, it's estimated that over 20 million Americans have thyroid dysfunction, yet at least half of these cases are undiagnosed and, consequently, untreated. When my hubby was diagnosed, he had visited numerous doctors, and one doctor sent him to a cardiologist.  It wasn't until we visited an internal medicine doctor who specialized in thyroid issues (we didn't know this at the time) that he finally found some answers. After a series of blood tests and thorough examinations, it was confirmed that he had an underactive thyroid. This explained all of his symptoms and gave him a sense of relief to finally have a diagnosis. With the help of medication, he was able to regulate his thyroid levels, and slowly but surely, his symptoms started to improve. He no longer felt exhausted all the time and was able to lose the extra weight he had been carrying around. It was a long journey, but he was grateful to have finally found the right doctor and treatment to help him feel better.

Cathy has her own story about her diagnosis. One of her doctors said it was menopause. She knew better and finally, after testing she also was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid.

I know many folks that are dealing with a thyroid problem and I'm sure you do too. Early detection and proper management can greatly improve the quality of life for those with a thyroid disorder. It is also important for the general public to understand the impact of thyroid disorders and to show support and understanding for those who are dealing with them. By raising awareness and promoting education about thyroid health, we can help those who are struggling with this condition and contribute to a healthier society overall.

Do you struggle with a thyroid problem? We'd love to hear from you. Comment below.

January Hot Tea Month

Step into the new year with a steaming cup of comfort and celebrate January as the official month of hot tea.

January is a month that is often associated with cold temperatures, snow, and the start of a new year, at least in the northern hemisphere. However, it is also a month that brings with it the celebration of one of the most beloved and comforting beverages in the world: hot tea. January is officially recognized as Hot Tea Month, a time to celebrate the warmth, comfort, and health benefits that come with a steaming cup of tea. As the winter chill sets in, there is nothing quite like wrapping your hands around a hot mug of tea and taking in its soothing aroma. Whether it's a classic black tea, a fragrant herbal blend, or a delicate white tea, there is a type of tea for every taste and mood. Hot tea not only warms the body, but it also warms the soul, providing a sense of comfort and relaxation in the midst of the cold winter months. In addition to its comforting qualities, tea also offers a variety of health benefits. From boosting the immune system to aiding in digestion, tea is a natural remedy for many ailments. It is also a rich source of antioxidants, which can help fight against diseases and improve overall well-being. As we start the new year, it is the perfect time to incorporate the ritual of drinking hot tea into our daily routines. Whether it's enjoying a cup with breakfast, taking a break in the afternoon, or winding down in the evening, hot tea can be a simple yet meaningful way to add a sense of warmth and relaxation to our busy lives. So let's raise a cup to Hot Tea Month and all the joy and comfort it brings during the chilly month of January.

HISTORY OF TEA BAGS

  • 2337 B.C. - According to ancient Chinese legend, Emperor Shen Nung was sitting beneath a tree one day while his servant was boiling water for him to drink. As the water was boiling, some leaves from a nearby tree fell into the pot. The emperor didn't notice and drank the water, only to find that it had a delicious and refreshing taste. He was intrigued by this new flavor and asked his servant what had happened. The servant explained that the leaves were from a nearby plant known as Camellia sinensis and that they had infused their flavor into the water. This was the accidental discovery of hot brewed tea, which would go on to become one of the most beloved and widely consumed beverages in the world.

  • 1784 - In the early 18th century, tea had become an incredibly popular drink in Britain. However, the high import taxes imposed on tea by the British government made it an expensive luxury that only the wealthy could afford. This led to a rise in smuggling practices, as tea could be obtained at a much lower cost from other countries such as Holland. This not only resulted in a loss of revenue for the government, but it also created a sense of resentment among the general public who felt that they were being unfairly taxed. In an attempt to put an end to this illegal activity and boost the sales of legally imported tea, the British parliament made the decision to reduce import taxes on tea in 1784. Despite the initial resistance, the reduction in import taxes on tea proved to be a successful move by the British parliament. It not only helped to end the rampant smuggling of tea but also made tea a more affordable and widely consumed beverage in Britain. This decision also had a ripple effect on other industries, such as ceramic and porcelain, as the demand for tea sets and accessories increased. Today, tea remains an integral part of British culture, and the reduction in import taxes on tea is seen as a pivotal moment in the history of the British tea trade.

  • 1904 - In the early 20th century, tea was a popular beverage in both Europe and America. However, brewing tea was a time-consuming and messy process, requiring loose tea leaves to be steeped in hot water and then strained. This made it difficult for people to enjoy a cup of tea on the go or in the workplace. Thomas Sullivan, a New York City tea merchant, recognized this problem and saw an opportunity to revolutionize the way tea was consumed.

  • In 1904, Sullivan began sending out samples of his tea to potential customers in small silk bags. These bags were intended to be opened and the tea leaves emptied into a pot for brewing. However, many customers misunderstood and simply placed the entire bag into hot water, creating a convenient and mess-free way to brew tea. Realizing the potential of this accidental invention, Sullivan began producing his tea in pre-made bags and marketing them as 'tea bags.'
  • Sullivan's tea bags quickly gained popularity, particularly with busy housewives and office workers. They eliminated the need for tea strainers and made brewing tea quick and easy. In addition, the bags were more affordable than loose tea and reduced waste, as they could be used multiple times before being discarded. As a kid, I remember our Grandma Helen would reuse her tea bags during the day.
  • To further promote his tea bags, Sullivan distributed them to hotels and restaurants, where they were well-received by both customers and staff. He also advertised his product in newspapers and magazines, highlighting the convenience and quality of his tea bags. As demand for his product grew, Sullivan expanded his business and began exporting tea bags to other countries.
  • Despite facing initial criticism from traditional tea drinkers who believed loose tea was superior, Sullivan's tea bags continued to gain popularity and by the 1920s, they had become the preferred method of brewing tea in America. Sullivan's innovative marketing tactics and dedication to quality tea helped him build a successful business and revolutionize the way people consumed tea.

HOT TEA MONTH ACTIVITIES

  1. Buy a tea you've never tried. the world of tea is full of endless tea possibilities. When buying a new tea, it is important to do some research beforehand to ensure that you are getting a high-quality product. This can involve reading reviews, asking for recommendations from friends or tea experts, and familiarizing yourself with the different types of tea and their health benefits.
  2. Host a tea party with friends and family. You can make it a casual gathering or a more formal affair, complete with fancy teacups and saucers. Encourage everyone to bring their favorite tea to share and have a tasting session. This is a great opportunity to try out different teas and expand your palate.

  3. Take a trip to a local tea shop or cafe and indulge in some tea tasting. Many tea shops offer a wide variety of teas and knowledgeable staff who can guide you through the different flavors and blends. You may even discover a new favorite tea or learn something new about the origins and traditions of tea.

  4. If you want to get more hands-on, consider taking a tea-making class. These classes can teach you how to properly brew tea and create your own blends using herbs and spices. You can also learn about the different health benefits of tea and how to incorporate it into your daily routine for a healthier lifestyle.
HEALTH BENEFITS

Everyday Health has great information on the best teas to drink for your health.

  1. Green tea may reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes and promote heart health.
  2. Black tea may help reduce inflammation and produce healthy cognition. I could definitely benefit from black tea.
  3. Oolong tea may contribute to healthier cholesterol levels.
  4. Chamomile tea may aid sleep and support immunity. Cathy says it helps with her sleep but not everyone can drink it especially if you have allergies to chamomile.
  5. Ginger tea may help treat nausea and vomiting. I do know first-hand that ginger does work for upset stomachs.
  6. Peppermint tea is associated with a healthy digestive system.
  7. Hibiscus tea may play a role in lowering blood pressure. Cathy tried the tea for that reason and you'll have to ask her if it worked. I think it would have to be a habitual drink to work for lowering blood pressure.
  8. Fennel tea may ease menopause symptoms. I wish I had known a long time ago, I would've tried it.
I hope you found this information helpful on your tea-drinking journey. Do you have a particular tea you love to drink? We'd love to hear from you in the comments below. ⮟⮟⮟

A Tribute for our Mother’s 90th Birthday

January 3rd marks a very special occasion as we come together to celebrate the 90th birthday of our beloved mother, Mama Sassy. It is a milestone that is truly worth celebrating, as it is a testament to the strength, resilience, and love that she has embodied throughout her life. As we reflect on the incredible journey that our mother has taken, we are filled with gratitude for all the sacrifices she has made for our family.

Our mother has always been the heart and soul of our family. She has been the pillar of strength that has held us all together through the highs and lows of life. Her unwavering love and support have been our constant source of inspiration and motivation. We have watched her handle every challenge with grace and determination, and her faith in God has taught us the power of resilience and perseverance.

Our mother has also been the epitome of selflessness. She has always put the needs of her family above her own, never once complaining or seeking recognition for all that she does. She has been a source of love, comfort, and guidance, always there to listen and offer her wise words of advice. We are forever grateful for the sacrifices she has made to ensure that we have a happy and fulfilling life.

As we celebrate her 90th birthday, we are reminded of all the wonderful memories and moments that we have shared with our mother. From her delicious home-cooked meals, New England Boiled Dinner, and Whoopie Pies, to her warm hugs and infectious laughter, she has filled our lives with so much joy and love. Her kind and nurturing spirit has touched the lives of everyone she has met, and her legacy will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Born in a time of great change and turmoil, our mother witnessed the world go through significant events and transformations. She lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and countless other historical moments that shaped the world we know today. She experienced firsthand the struggles and hardships that came with those times, but also the strength and determination that allowed her to overcome them.

Our mother was born in a small town in Maine in the early 1930s, a time when life was much simpler and slower-paced. She often talks about her childhood, filled with memories of playing outside with her siblings and friends and going to the local schoolhouse. She recently told everyone that she truly lived off the grid growing up in Maine. ☺

As a young person, she always had a passion for sports and music. She excelled in basketball and even played on her high school team. She learned to play the guitar, the piano and enjoys singing. Working a job at a local soda counter, she loved being able to interact with customers and make their favorite drinks.

But her life took a dramatic turn when she made the decision to join the US Marine Corps. It was a bold move for a young woman at that time, but she was determined to serve her country and make a difference. She went through rigorous training and emerged as a strong and capable Marine.

Stationed in North Carolina, she was assigned to work as a staff office stenographer and recorded court material by shorthand. Shortly after arriving at Camp Legeune, she met and married our father.

As a USMC wife, she faced a different set of challenges. She had to adapt to a constantly changing lifestyle, moving from one place to another every few years. But she embraced this lifestyle and made the most of it. She fell in love with the culture, the weather, and the beauty of Hawaii, where our father was stationed for a couple years. She also had the opportunity to travel to different states and experience different cultures, which broadened her perspective on life. She made long-time friends wherever the USMC would take them.

While on his last assignment at Quantico Marine Corps Base, our father retired from the USMC and settled in Virginia. But we would have never guessed it would be their last stop together.

Throughout her life, she has endured unimaginable pain and heartache. She has experienced the loss of not one, but three husbands, each one leaving a void in her life that can never be filled. The first was our father, Walter, who was taken too soon by a massive heart attack in his early 40's.

The second was Dan, whom she met at our church. They were married for 7 years and he also died of heart disease. During their marriage, she suffered the devastating loss of her 4th child, Terry (who had just graduated from high school) in a car accident.

After being a widow for 19 years, she married Clint, she called him Sweetie☺. They were married for 17 years.

Each time, she was left to pick up the pieces and carry on, holding on to her faith. She has learned to cherish the memories of her loved ones and find solace in the fact that they will always hold a special place in her heart. Her strength and resilience in the face of such tragedy is a testament to her steadfast spirit and love for those she has lost. Despite the hardships she has faced, she continues to carry on, a true example of courage and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Our mother also experienced the joys and challenges of motherhood, raising six children with love, patience, and strength. She always put her family first and made sure we had everything we needed to succeed. She taught us important values like kindness, compassion, and resilience, and we are forever grateful for the strong foundation she gave us.

As she entered her later years, our mother continued to embrace life with enthusiasm and grace. She opened a business, traveled, learned new skills, and stayed active in her community and church.

Her love for crocheting knows no bounds, as she has tirelessly created numerous hats for the homeless, and those in need. Currently, she’s embarked on a new endeavor, making baby blankets for a local pregnancy center.

Now, as we gather to celebrate her 90th birthday, we are in awe of all that our mother has accomplished and the impact she has had on our lives and the lives of so many others. Her unwavering love, support, and wisdom have shaped us into the people we are today, and we are forever grateful for her presence in our lives.

Happy 90th birthday, Mom – you are truly an incredible woman and the best mother anyone could ask for. May your life continue to be filled with love, happiness, and blessings. We love you more than words can express.

Your sassy daughters,
Cathy, Rhonda and Kelly
