Restaurant Review of Grass Rootes in Culpeper Virginia

  • ***UPDATED 4/29/23***

  • Name of restaurant: Grass Rootes in Culpeper Virginia

  • Date of visit: April 23, 2021

    Star rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ out of 5

Grass Rootes is a farm-to-a-table dining experience in historic downtown Culpeper at the corner of East Davis Street and South East Street. According to their website, they are in the oldest commercial building in Culpeper and you can tell. You could be a little confused by the outside of the building as it touts the old-style hardware store it used to be once upon a time. They are open Wednesday through Saturday for lunch 11am-2:00pm and or dinner 5:30-9pm.

We parked around back in a lot behind the building. You can use the back stairs to go into the restaurant but we walked around the front of the building and used the main entrance. We arrived around 11:30am on a Friday and it wasn't busy, yet. When noon hit, the restaurant started filling up. Although it wasn't crowded, it was good to see these small restaurants feeding folks.

  • The decor is rustic with the original walls and beams showing off its beauty. Grass Rootes displays its name on the far wall as you walk in.

  • The dining area had tables and booths plus the large wall with the name of the restaurant had a bench along that wall with bright pillows for color and comfort. They also have outside seating out front of the building and on the deck in the back. We sat at a table for four. The restaurant was clean and tidy looking.

  • It was a bit chilly outside that day and it was also chilly in the building. They had the fireplace going but it didn't really keep the chill off. Another couple was seated there otherwise we would have asked for that table.

  • The bar was opened that very day because the Governor lifted the ban on sitting at the bar. There was a couple sitting there and a little while later another couple of folks went to the bar. They were so excited to be able to sit at the bar you could hear their excitement through the restaurant. Can you find the buffalo head hanging around?

  • The menu offers a wide variety of delicious and mouthwatering starters and main courses that will appeal to most people. Not sure if they have a children's menu because we didn't have children with us and I didn't notice an option on their menu. The price ranges for lunch from $7.50 - $14.00 and dinner up to $39.00.  They offer a wine list and specialty cocktails on their menu. The menu did not list desserts but they did offer it but we were too full to try them out.

  • The waitress was super sweet and attentive. They sent over a small loaf of homemade bread and butter while we decided on the menu. Once she came back to take our order, she spouted out all kinds of specials of the day which two of those Cathy and I choose to order.

Our food came out within 10-15 minutes which we thought was super fast for a full-service restaurant.

  • Cathy ordered the steak tacos with a side salad. They were made with cheese twills and blue tortilla shells, full of meat. Super tasty, tender, and messy. They give you cloth napkins but they were so messy that Cathy asked for extra paper napkins and she obliged. Cathy would order them again. The side salad was made with spring greens, carrots, cucumbers, onions, blue cheese & their house vinaigrette, tangy and delicious.

  • I ordered one of the specials of the day too, the Reuben sandwich. It was good, not soggy like some can be with sauerkraut too wet. The bread was toasted and crispy. Just enough meat and sauerkraut to make it a decent sandwich. I had the choice of fries or a side salad. I also ordered the salad and I could devour a big bowl of that salad. They offer it as a whole salad and you can add a protein for an extra cost.

  • Rhonda ordered the BLT with a side salad. It was abundantly full of bacon and layered with tomatoes and lettuce with mayonnaise on the side which is a nice touch. The bacon was crispy just the way she likes it.

  • They do have live music on occasion and supposedly they have had famous musicians pop in and play. Check them out on Facebook and their website

  • Stop by and try them out 195 East Davis Street, Culpeper, VA 22701  telephone 540.764.4229.

They do offer delivery within the town of Culpeper.

Our rating system is 1 - 5 stars.

    • 1 ⭐ = Poor. There’s nothing good about the restaurant. We won't be returning.
    • 2 ⭐ ⭐ = Okay. The restaurant has one or two good qualities. It might be a delicious dish, helpful staff, or an inviting atmosphere. Still, you have no interest in visiting again.
    • 3 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ = Good. A fine example of a specific kind of restaurant. It can be delicious food with excellent service. We may think about returning if we wish to have that particular cuisine.
    • 4 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ = Excellent. Delicious food, appealing atmosphere, helpful staff, and brilliant service.
    • 5 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ = Extraordinary. Meets an elite standard by which you judge all other restaurants. The staff is always ready to help, the premises are extremely clean, the atmosphere is lovely, and the food is both delicious and beautifully presented.

  • We gave Grass Rootes ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ONLY because we were cold. We understand it's a big open and old building but we have to be honest. The food was wonderful and we would definitely be going back. We do recommend you try it out when you are in Culpeper.

Have you visited Grass Rootes? If so, we’d love to hear about your experience.

    Keep it sassy,
    Kelly
