DIY Snowy Mason Jar Lanterns
Here’s a fun, budget-friendly Christmas craft idea using items you can easily find at the dollar store or lying around your house like I do: DIY Snowy Mason Jar Lanterns. These are festive, simple to make, and bring a cozy glow to your holiday decor. Make more than one to make a statement vignette.
DIY Snowy Mason Jar Lanterns
Materials:
• Glass jars (mason jars or any similar glass jars)
• Epsom salt or coarse white glitter (for the “snow” effect)
• Mod Podge or white glue
• Small sponge brush or paintbrush
• Battery-operated tea lights or small LED string lights
• Twine or ribbon (for a rustic finish)
• Mini pinecones, sprigs of artificial greenery, or small holiday ornaments
• Hot glue gun (optional, depending on if you want to add extra decorations)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Jar: Before starting, make sure the jar is clean and dry. Remove any labels if necessary.
2. Apply Glue: Use a sponge brush to coat the outside of the jar (except for the very top where the lid would screw on) with a layer of Mod Podge or white glue. Be generous but avoid drips.
3. Add “Snow”: While the glue is still wet, sprinkle the Epsom salt or white glitter over the jar to give it a snowy texture. Rotate the jar to make sure it’s covered evenly. Apply a second coat of glue and glitter once the first one dries for a heavier snow effect.
4. Let it Dry: Allow the jar to dry completely. This could take around 30 minutes to an hour.
5. Decorate the Rim: Tie a piece of twine or ribbon around the neck of the jar. For added decoration, hot glue a small pinecone, a sprig of greenery, or a tiny ornament to the twine or ribbon for a festive touch.
6. Add Lighting: Place a battery-operated tea light or a small set of LED string lights inside the jar. Avoid real candles to keep the jar safe.
7. Display: Your lantern is ready! Display it on a mantel, as a table centerpiece, or on a windowsill. When lit, it creates a cozy, frosted glow perfect for the holiday season.
Optional Variations:
• Add Color: Add a few drops of food coloring to the Mod Podge for a subtle colored glow (light blue can look very “wintery”).
• Stenciled Patterns: Use holiday-themed stencils to create patterns or shapes on the jar before adding glitter, leaving areas clear for light to shine through in festive shapes.
• Mini Scenes: Instead of lighting, fill the jar with small bottle-brush trees and mini figures for a snowy scene you can display on a shelf.
This craft is easy, affordable, and adds a beautiful, custom touch to your Christmas decor. Plus, it’s kid-friendly and makes a great gift!
Enjoy the holidays and don't forget to keep it sassy!
