Fondue Menu for Valentine's Day

Get ready to dip into deliciousness this month as we celebrate National Fondue Month!

Fondue, the hot melted cheese is a dish that has been enjoyed for centuries in various parts of the world, but it has gained immense popularity in recent times. This deliciously rich and indulgent dish has become a staple at dinner parties, and it is not hard to see why. The word 'fondue' comes from the French word 'fondre,' which means 'to melt.' And that is precisely what makes this dish so irresistible - the creamy, melted cheese that is perfect for dipping a variety of delectable foods.

Valentine's Day is a special occasion for my family, one that we look forward to every year. While some families may opt for a fancy dinner at a restaurant or a romantic getaway, my family has a unique tradition that we have been following for years - we celebrate Valentine's Day with fondue.

Here are some intriguing facts about fondue:

  1. Figugegl - As part of its fondue promotion, the phrase "Fondue isch guet und git e gueti Luune," which translates to "Fondue is good and creates a good mood," was coined and formed as "FIGUGEGL."
  2. Watch the bread - According to tradition, if a person loses a piece of bread while dipping it into the fondue pot, he or she buys drinks for everyone else.
  3. Manners are important - Double-dipping and eating straight from the dip-coating fork isn’t permitted in fondue etiquette.
  4. Sip and dunk - Genevans only chug hot tea or chilly white wine with their fondue since anything else will likely cause indigestion.
  5. The all-important sides - Fondue is usually served with cucumbers, sweet onions, and crisped meats in Switzerland.

Whether you're celebrating with your significant other, friends, or family, there are endless ways to make this day memorable. From traditional gestures like exchanging gifts and going out to dinner, to unique and creative ways to express your love, here are a few ideas to help you make this Valentine's Day one to remember. So, get ready to spread some love and joy with these suggestions for a perfect Valentine's Day celebration.

We played this little dice game on Valentine's Day last year. We love it and it's fun to win all those candy kisses. You can download this for FREE here Valentine’s Day Candy Dice Game - Cupcake Diaries.

When it comes to creating the perfect fondue, there are a multitude of cheese options to choose from, but for an all-around delightful experience, look no further than fontina, Gruyère, and gouda. These three cheeses bring their unique flavors, textures, and melting qualities to the fondue pot, creating an irresistible culinary delight.

The following fondue recipes are going on our table this year.

Course: Appetizer

Keyword: Appetizer, Cheese Fondue, spinach artichoke dip

Servings: 6  Calories: 184kcal  Author: Erica Walker

Ingredients

·         1 1/2 cups vegetable broth

·         1 cup fresh spinach loosely packed, chopped

·         3/4 cup artichoke hearts chopped

·         1 teaspoon minced garlic

·         7 ounces Butterkäse cheese grated - if you can't find this, you can substitute Farmer's Cheese or Romanian Cream Cheese

·         5 ounces Parmesan cheese blend grated - be sure to find one that has the first two ingredients as parmesan and Fontina cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable broth in a fondue pot or similar cooking pot.
  2. When hot (do not bring to a boil) add spinach, artichoke hearts, and garlic and mix well. Continue to cook until the spinach and artichoke hearts soften.
  3. Combine the Butterkäse and Parmesan/Fontina grated cheeses, and add to the broth a little bit at a time, stirring constantly.
  4. Continue melting a stirring until you have added all the cheese and the consistency is smooth and creamy.
  5. Serve with French bread pieces, steamed vegetables, cooked meat, chips, pretzels, or crackers.

Substitution:

  1. Fake Butterkäse Cheese (Keep in mind, the fake really isn't quite as good as the real Butterkäse. Only use this recipe if you can't find it anywhere):
  2. Mix 1/2 brick (4oz) of cream cheese with 1/4 cup of buttermilk and 1/2 tablespoon of sour cream.

Notes

*Please do not double or triple this recipe. The cheese is expensive and you will have a big ball of cheese that won't melt. If you want to prepare this for a large group, prepare one batch at a time.
