Our annual trip to the
OBX came in May this year. Typically the weather is super nice this time of year. But the ocean water is still to chilly for me.
We stay at my husbands family vacation home in Rodanthe. Have you ever seen the movie Nights in Rodanthe? That house is just up the street. It's especially fun to look at that house and take pictures. Someone actually moved the house a few years ago from it's original beachfront property because it was getting ready to go into the ocean. I'm glad whoever bought the house saved it.
We stayed ten days this time around. The weather was perfect, in the mid 70s most of the time. Our daughter and grandson came along. We’ve been coming done as a family for over 30 years. My husband's family has been coming down for over 45 years.
Day1: We usually stop at a rest area a couple hours into the trip. Virginia has these LOVE signs all around the state. The next stop is ALWAYS The Border Station. Half the store is in Virginia and the other in North Carolina. We fill up our gas tank and go inside the store to use the restroom and walk around to see what kind of snacks or treats we can find.
We made it to the house with enough time left in the day to walk to the beach. We weren't planning on playing in the water, just go down to see the beach, but our grandson was so excited he couldn’t help to get soaked by the waves.
Day 2: After getting groceries, we headed off to take a walk at a day camp in Salvo. We took our pup and grandson on this walk. He’s such a ham when it comes to picture taking. The sound access is there and while walking we saw all these tiny crabs under a wooden bridge.
Sand play under the house is a must & reading that book you don’t have time to read is most relaxing.
Baxter loves to sit with me and it doesn't really matter whether I'm on a hammock or not.
Day 3: Going to the NC Aquarium in Manteo is on the agenda. It's small but they have an outdoor area for the kiddos and you can spend an hour just hanging out there.
Finding a Christmas ornament is always a blast at The Christmas Shop. They have rooms filled with ornaments and one room with just all Santa Clause.
That afternoon we headed to the beach, the water was beautiful but still chilly. It really didn't matter to our grandson because for a solid hour he ran and jumped along the shore.
Day 4: Rodanthe has a community center with this awesome pirate ship playground. That is all our grandson could talk about, playing on the playground.
That afternoon we headed off to the
Village Conery for some ice cream. They had all kinds of flavors. Hubby decided on Key Lime Pie, tart and sweet all at the same time. There motto is "Rain or shine it's ice cream time".
Day 5: It was a bit chilly this day to go to the beach so we headed to the
Dowdy Park in Nags Head. Dorian ran and played until he couldn't run and play any longer.
The giant Adirondack chairs are all over the OBX. We had to a pic of Dorian sitting in the chair, he looks so tiny.
Day 6: Dorian wanted to see the lighthouse, again, so we jetted down to
Cape Hatteras. After the visit to the lighthouse we ordered our lunch at the
Buxton Munch Co. We discovered it a couple of years ago and it's a must every year. Great food and service. Since COVID hit, they do not have indoor seating but they do have picnic table outside. We went back to Cape Hatteras Park and had a picnic at their picnic area under the live oak trees.
Day 7: In the morning, Jay and I went to the
Beads & Beans OBX for their famous cinnamon rolls. Luckily we got there just in time to buy the last of them. Get there early folks.
Rodanthe and the surrounding area has a feral cat problem and there seems to be a cat under the house every time we visit. Jay can't help it, he had to feed it and it came back every morning and evening to eat.
Another afternoon at the beach and once again Dorian ran and played until he couldn't run and play any longer.
It was takeout pizza for dinner from
Lisa's Pizzeria in Rodanthe. They have been there for 35 years and every year we eat there or order from them.
Day 8: The end of our vacation is near and we spent time at the beach playing and collecting shells, in the hammock (my favorite spot) and cooking a
low country boil for dinner. If you have never made this, you need to try it, it's easy and so very scrumptious. You can add any time of seafood you like or none at all.
Day 9: Last day of relaxing. Can you tell by the multiple photos that I love the hammock?
More play under the house in the sand for Dorian.
Hopped in the shower and who did I see? Mr. Frog watching me.
Can't help but mention the
Brew Thru T-shirt. You drive through, order your beverage, snacks and tshirt and away you go.
The house was named BLESSINGS by my in-laws. It’s an appropriate name because sure enough, the house has brought us multiple blessings every year of enjoyment, relaxation and fun.
Day 10: It's clean up and get on the road. I must say, it's been awhile since I've enjoyed such a great vacation.
The next vacay will be in Orlando, Disney World here we come!
I hope you enjoyed this post. Have you ever been to the OBX? We'd love to hear your experiences and some of your favorite things to do and restaurants you love.
