July 4th Safety Tips

As we get ready to celebrate Independence Day in the USA, many of us plan to attend fireworks displays, a backyard picnic, or perhaps enjoy the fun at the beach. The American Red Cross offers these tips so you can enjoy a fun-packed, safe holiday.

🎆 FIREWORKS SAFETY 🎆

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public firework show put on by professionals. Stay at least 500 feet away from the show. Many states outlaw most fireworks. Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks. If you are setting fireworks off at home, follow these safety steps:

  • Never give fireworks to small children, and never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures, or flammable materials. Always follow the instructions on the packaging.
  • Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.
  • Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.
  • Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud."
  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
  1.

😋 PICNIC SAFETY 🧺

  • Wash your hands before preparing the food.
  • Don’t leave food out in the hot sun. Keep perishable foods in a cooler with plenty of ice or freezer gel packs.
  • If you are going to cook on the grill, never grill indoors. Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire.
  • Always supervise the grill when in use. Don’t add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited. Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe.
  • Make sure everyone, including pets, stays away from the grill.
  1.

🏖 BEACH SAFETY 🏖

Watch the weather and get out of the water at the first sign of lightning or the rumble of thunder. Stay indoors and away from water for 30 minutes after the last lightning flashes or thunder roars.

Plan ahead for aquatic activities:

  • Swim only at a beach with a lifeguard, within the designated swimming area. Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards and ask them about the local condition.
  • Always designate a “water watcher” whose sole responsibility is to keep a close eye and constant attention on everyone in and around the water until the next water watcher takes over.
  • Children, inexperienced swimmers, and all boaters should wear properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets.
  • Protect your neck – don’t dive in headfirst. Walk carefully into open waters. Watch out for and avoid aquatic life.
  • If you are caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Then, turn and swim to shore. If you can't swim to shore, float or tread water until you are free of the rip current and then head toward shore. Draw attention to yourself by waving and calling for help.
We hope this helps you stay safe while you celebrate Independence Day in the great United States of America.

Do you have plans for July 4th? If you live in another country that celebrates Independence Day, we'd love to hear from you. How do you celebrate the holiday?

Stay safe and sassy,
Kelly

Product Review - Hurrikane Mason Jar Vacuum Sealer Kit

We have been getting a bunch of products to review lately, thanks to our followers and subscribers. This particular review is on the Hurrikane Mason Jar Vacuum Sealer Kit. I do have a bag sealer that I use frequently but thought this jar sealer would be more convenient because it's small and takes up no space. Rhonda recently reviewed the Foodsaver, if you are interested read about it here
→ Product Review - FoodSaver V4400.

The original test I made was with lettuce. I had some cut-up leftover romaine lettuce and put it in a jar.

I used the wide-mouthed sealer along with the handheld pump. It worked well and sealed quickly. After I sealed the jar, I held the jar up by the lid to make sure it was sealed and put it in the refrigerator to test how long it would stay fresh before turning brown. After 4 days in the jar, it looked as good as it did when I sealed the jar.

Here's how it works ⮟

Package includes:

  • 1 Wide Mouth Sealer
  • 1 Regular Mouth Sealer
  • 1 Electric Vacuum Pump
  • 3 Wide-mouth Mason Jar Lids
  • 3 Regular-mouth Mason Jar Lids
  • 3 Wide-mouth Bands
  • 3 Regular-mouth Bands
  • 1 USB Charging Cable
  • Manual

The product is environmentally safe. It's BPA-free, non-toxic, and tasteless. Easy to clean by hand, dishwasher safe.

It's portable and rechargeable. With a one-touch switch button, easy to use and fast, Only need 3-5 Seconds to vacuum air.

Vacuum storage can create an airtight barrier, blocking moisture and oxygen to extend freshness and locking flavors and nutrients, helping foods fresh up to 5X longer.

Do you have a vacuum sealer? We'd love to hear from you in the comments below.

National Rose Month 2023

June is National Rose Month. It’s the ideal month to celebrate them as they’re in full bloom during this season. Roses have long held a special place in everyone’s hearts and hold a prominent place in history as well. They have been used to show affection towards another person or as symbols in wars, weddings, etc. In the United States, the rose is a state flower of five states. This beautiful flower has surely earned its place in everyone’s minds and hearts.

Mama Sassy has a beautiful rose bush that has 2 different colored roses.

Here's a little history of National Rose Month

It's celebrated annually to recognize its beauty, popularity, and symbolism. The flower has over 300 species as well as different sizes and colors. Most species of roses are native to Asia, with other species originating from Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. The first rose in America is believed to have been found in modern-day Colorado, As for the most common garden roses found today, they date back to 18th-century China.

It was at the beginning of the 20th century that a part of the White House property, which was used for stables, was transformed into a rose garden, although it houses more than just roses. National Rose Month was first observed in 1959. It was only around three decades later that President Ronald Reagan officially made the rose the national flower of the USA.

The rose has been used for a variety of purposes. It serves as an inspiration for artists. The flower is beautiful and fragrant and is widely used as an ornamental garden indoor or outdoor plant, as well as decoration, food, medicinal purposes, or even in aromatherapy and commercial perfumery.

The rose is more than just a pretty flower and is packed with medicinal properties. The petals contain polyphenols and antioxidants that help to protect the body from cell damage. Moreover, the polyphenols in rose tea aid in reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cognitive diseases.

Fascinating Facts about Roses

The oldest living rose is 1,000 years old. This impressively enduring rose grows on a wall on the Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany.

You can eat roses. Their petals are edible and rose water (made from soaking the petals in water) is often added to jellies or jams, or is used as flavoring in Indian and Chinese dishes. Roses also grow a berry-shaped fruit called rose hips. The fruit can be orange, red, dark purple, or even black. Rose hips are packed with vitamin C and can be used in cocktails or dried to create a refreshing tea.

Each Rose Color has a Different Meaning

Red roses symbolize love and romance.

Pink roses exude grace and elegance.

The yellow rose represents friendship and cheer.

White roses signify sympathy, which is why you might often see them at funerals. However, white roses can also represent purity, spirituality, and innocence.

Orange represents enthusiasm.

The Most Expensive Rose Sold for Millions of Dollars

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but would have a much lower price tag. Famous rose breeder David Austin spent 15 years and $5 million breeding a rare rose variety that he called Juliet. The Juliet rose sold for $15.8 million in 2006, making it the world's most expensive rose cultivar.
