Bread Slicer Review

I recently bought a new bread maker, the Frigidaire 15 Program Automatic Bread Maker from Walmart, and while searching for a new bread maker to buy, I found Amazon was advertising this collapsible bread slicer. I did a little research and discovered that majority of folks who bought it gave it a great rating.  So needless to say, I bought one.

My first thought was when I took it out of the box is that you can cut the bread in different thicknesses. It has 4 different thicknesses: 0.59”/ 0.79”/ 0.98”/ 1.18". It stands up well after opening.

Once I had my bread ready, I held it up against the front of the slicer, took a long serrated knife, and began slicing. The slicer moved around a bit and I didn’t like that so I put some grip shelf liner under it. That worked like a charm to keep it steady. Plus you don’t have to worry about cutting your fingers.

For every slice, I took each cut slice of bread and moved it to the cutting board.

VOILA!! I have sliced bread. It cleans up super easily just by rinsing off all the crumbs. It is dishwasher safe. It folds up nicely for storage.

It’s a great gadget and is better than slicing bread without it and cuts evenly.

The material is made of food-grade ABS resin, non-toxic, tasteless, safe, and healthy.

It would work for other kinds of bread such as bagels, English muffins, and more.

It cost around $10 which I think it’s worth every penny.

You can find it on Amazon, Foldable Bread Cutting Bread Slicer Guide.

There are so many bread slicers available on Amazon. I highly recommend one if you make homemade bread.

Here is the bread machine white bread recipe that is full proof, soft and delicious.

Rodan + Fields Product Review

We have a long time social media follower & friend that is an independent consultant for Rodan + Fields. Jeanette has sent us sample products before and we loved them. She reached out to us again and said that she had some product samples we could try. She sent us samples of Enhancements Micro-Dermabrasion Paste & Active Hydration Body Replenish. The samples were sent in a pretty blue bag with instructions to the products.

The first product we sampled was the Rodan + Fields Enhancements Micro-Dermabrasion Paste. It is a face and body sugar and salt based scrub that gently buffs away dull skin cells and dry, flaky skin.

REVIEW: the first thing we noticed is the citrus scent. We applied it to our hands for testing purposes and after washing it off, it left our skin super silky and smooth. It didn't leave a greasy residue and our hands had a bright and vibrant glow. As we get older our skin tends to dry out and look like dried up leaves. Nobody wants that 😉 This product should only be used a couple of times of week. The price on the website is $83 but if you sign up for the PC Perks, you get a discount and other benefits.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

The last product we sampled was the Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish. It is an all-over hydration lotion that supposedly gives you a younger-looking, younger-acting skin with their breakthrough body moisturizer that instantly and continuously hydrates.

REVIEW: we were told to exfoliate with the first product and use the Active Hydration Body Replenish after exfoliating. It didn't have much of a scent, which was the first thing we noticed. It wasn't greasy and made our hands feel super soft and look much younger. We would recommend this product along with the scrub. This product has $66 price tag but again, if you want to save a bit of cash, you can subscribe to their Perks program.

If you are so inclined to try any of the products, you can head over to her website Rodan + Fields .

Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup Mix Review

 ****UPDATED 8/5/23***

Cathy's review on Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup Mix
🍲🍲🍲🍲🍲🍲🍲🍲

Well, I wanted to try a chicken dish and thought chicken soup would be a great start because I can freeze what I don't eat right away. Progresso soups are really pretty good so I thought why not try the mix. I have purchased the can soups and liked them.

Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup Mix

Looks easy and all you do is add cooked chicken  and water!

Instructions on the back of the package for the stovetop, slow cooker or instant pot.

8 cups of water in a 6-quart pot. Whisk in the contents of the pouch.

Bring to a boil.
I cooked chicken and added it as soon as I could so the
noodles get the meat flavor. They ask you to wait
until boiling but I don't follow instructions! LOL!

Like I said, I added chicken right away and
simmered after it reached boiling point.
Simmered for 20 minutes.

Smells and looks great!

I loved it!
I like soups and will definitely use this mix again in the winter because I want to add more cooked veggies to it. Enough flavor to add more water, as well. This is a great shelf-stable product to buy early and have on hand! Try it sometime!

You can purchase it at Walmart → Progresso.

I will try to make or taste something new once a week, so make sure you watch my Cathy Conversation and Coffee segments on Mondays!

Kayla’s Test Kitchen Lemon Doodle Cookie Recipe Review

Hey everyone! We have the privilege of having a guest blogger today. Kayla is Rhonda's business assistant and a very good one at that. She wanted to try her hand at writing a blog post with a baking review and we happily obliged. If you enjoyed this post, please leave a comment below.

🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

Kayla’s Test Kitchen

While scrolling Facebook, I came across a post from a bakery about lemondoodles. Now, maybe you’re like me and your first thought was what the heck is a lemondoodle and why do I think I need it? Or maybe you have encountered lemondoodles and you’re wondering why I live under a rock. Either way, it sparked an idea. I was dead set on making lemondoodles.

When I ran the idea by Cathy, she suggested I write about my experience, so here we are.

I did a quick search and found two recipes that sounded like good contenders for my little experiment. I printed them off and I was ready to go.

Here’s something you should know about me: I sometimes, maybe, just a little bit, fail to follow instructions, especially on recipes. Keep that in mind. I know Rhonda likes to follow the recipe to a T the first time and then make the changes the second time around, but that’s just not me.

First, I started with Mary’s Lemony Doodles from Just a Pinch which can be found here: Just a Pinch - Lemony Doodles

It seemed easy enough (and I had all the ingredients!) so that’s where the adventure began.

I added my dry ingredients and zest to a small mixing bowl and then I started to go a little off script.

The recipe calls for plain shortening, but I added butter flavored shortening (I like Crisco baking sticks) and sugar to a bigger mixing bowl and creamed them together with a hand mixer. Then I added the eggs one at a time and continued to mix until it was nice and creamy.

I added the dry ingredients in batches and mixed them by hand with a large spoon to avoid overmixing (I’m told it creates more gluten and a denser cookie and I don’t like that).

Here’s where things get a little shaky in my instruction-following abilities, but I must be transparent with you so that you don’t make my mistakes. I juiced half of my zested lemon and then added the required sugar. I know. I know I messed up. Half a lemon is WAY more than a teaspoon. I know that. I do. I did it anyway and I won’t do it again.

So, my lemon sugar was very thick and not really acceptable for rolling, but oh well. I thought I would just run with it.

I pulled out the big cookie scoop. I know the recipe says a generous teaspoon, but that’s not a cookie- that’s a disappointment. I understand there’s a time and a place for little cookies. Like for children and people with sugar issues and for dieters and all those other things that I don’t consider when I’m making a cookie. I would rather have more than a single bite. Sorry, not sorry.

Anyway, I went off the rails again and made a large round and plopped it in the too-wet sugar. As you can see, it didn’t exactly roll in the sugar very well.

Some sugar stuck to the dough, but not much. So, I swirled the bowl, sending the dough around and around to coat it without having to put my fingers in the wet sugar, a method I perfected by the end.

I placed each sugary ball of dough two inches apart or so on my parchment-lined baking sheet. Typically, I use the parchment paper that is marked with a grid, but we were all out. I had to improvise, but I thought I did a good job.

The recipe warned that the cookies would spread while baking. I was prepared for that, especially since I had used the big scoop.

I popped them in the oven at 350 for 10 minutes.

They were not done. They were super soft, still shiny, and hadn’t cracked. That one is on me though because I didn’t follow the instructions to make them small.

I stuck them back in for another 2 minutes.

Then another 2 minutes.

Finally, I took them out and they had just barely set. That’s how my family likes cookies, so that’s how I left them.

They were very light in color but had formed a nice crust on the bottom and did not fall apart when I moved them to the cooling rack, so I left them.

After a few minutes, I tried one. They were very lemony thanks to all the juice I used, but also very sugary. They had almost no chewiness to them, which I should have expected with the way they spread.

I put more in to bake for 15 minutes. It makes sense that I double or triple the cookie size that I would have to do the same to the cooking time.

It turns out 15 minutes was too long. The next batch came out crisp and not at all chewy like a doodle should be. The sugar also pooled in little spots and turned brown on the second and third batches.

Overall, not the best cookie I’ve ever made. It probably would have gone better if I had followed the instructions exactly. My dad seemed to share in my opinion, but my mom thought they were pretty good, but they’re also believers that there’s no such thing as a bad cookie.

FAMILY REVIEW:

Mom: “They’re really good. I really enjoy them. 4 out of 5 stars.”

Dad: “The first batch is better. The others are too crispy.”

Skittles Candy Coated Popcorn Recipe Review

***UPDATED 9/2/23***

I always like to try to make recipes with popcorn. I found this recipe that I thought would be fun and taste great.

The recipe was found here at Penny Pinchin Mom.

Skittles Candy Coated Popcorn

Ingredients:

4 cups of popcorn (plain, unsalted)

4 oz. butter or margarine

1/2 cup brown sugar

3/4 cup of Skittles® (use one flavor for each batch)

Waxed paper

Instructions or better yet what I did:

1. Separated candies by color.

2. Popped the popcorn and placed it in a bowl, set aside.

3. Put a sheet of waxed paper on the counter.

4. Melted butter with brown sugar on the stove on low heat. Stirred frequently to avoid scorching.

5. Pour in Skittles® candies. Stir until melted (you need to mash them down to help them dissolve).

6. Pour the hot candy mixture over the top of the popcorn & use a spatula to fold in the mixture until the popcorn is well covered. DO THIS QUICKLY!

7. Put the popcorn on waxed paper and spread thinly to allow it to cool.

My review:

I was expecting more flavor because candies by themselves have great flavor but when I mixed it with brown sugar and butter, it took some of that sour flavor away. The most time-consuming part was to separate the candy by color.

I don't think I will make this recipe again because of the flavor not being strong enough candy flavor.

Thanks,

Cathy
