Living in the Culpeper, Virginia area is always a treat to go to the historic downtown and choose from many restaurants. We decided to check out the 4 C's this time around on our monthly get-together.

The 4 C's is known for its Peruvian and South American cuisine but also serves your favorite sandwiches, burgers, pasta, breakfast dishes, and more.

The restaurant is situated right on Main Street with parking on the side of the road, which we do not recommend, it's a busy street during the lunch hour. We parked on the side of the building in a parking lot.

As we entered the building, it brought us back to that old dinner that we are all familiar with. We didn't know whether to just seat ourselves or wait, so we just sat at a large dining table. There was plenty of seating available at the time we arrived. Once we found our seat we waited on the only waiter that was available. They did add a couple of waiters around noon. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful to us four old gals. We had lots of questions and he was patient.

It took a while for our food to arrive, but it took us more than a few minutes to decide what to order. Our order arrives at 12:25pm which is 50 minutes after arriving.

Cathy ordered the Papa Rellena which is fresh mashed potatoes filled with sauteed beef rolled, seasoned potato flour deep fried, and served with salsa Criolla. She loved it enough to go back and order it again. She also said she would take Momma Sassy for their popular breakfast.

Rhonda ordered the chicken and cheese quesadilla with salad. The plate looked nice with the salad in the middle of the sliced quesadilla. It didn't come with sour cream, so she asked for it and he brought it right away. The quesadilla was cooked just right, not overdone. It was full of flavor.

Mom ordered the Philly steak and cheese sub. She asked for grilled onions and they were happy to oblige. It looked good but not overly full. She didn't complain.

I wanted to try one of their Peruvian dishes and ordered the Aji De Gallina chopped chicken mixed with spicy cream sauce, onions & pecans, served with rice & side salad. It was simply creamy with enough spiciness to give it that bight that I love. The pecans give it a bit of crunch and mix it with the rice to make a spectacular dish. A must-try if you happen to stop by for a meal.

We decided to try out their desserts. We could see in the dessert case they had apple pie, cinnamon rolls, maple pie, and coconut cream cake. We ordered the apple pie ala mode and the coconut cake. The waiter was confused and brought cinnamon roll ala mode. We did tell him that he brought out the wrong dessert but we decided not to waste it and kept the dish. He didn't offer to take it off the bill but we weren't going to be jerks and ask for it to be taken off. We shared the desserts among the four of us and thought they were delicious. The cake was moist and had just enough frosting with it covered in coconut.

The prices were reasonable with the most expensive dish at $14.95 but that was a steak dinner. Their breakfast is super cheap considering what you get. See the menus below for more details.

Neoclassical theatre vibes, an art deco-inspired sangria bar, a rooftop terrace, and a lively atmosphere frame an inviting exploration of the many delights from their kitchen. The owners are Puerto Rican and Chilean and invite you to enjoy fun and creative sangria, cocktails, and their small plates and taco menu.

Sister's Review:

CATHY I was wondering where this restaurant was located. It is in the old State Theater building. The old theater still has the ticket window. The halls are decorated with lights to add atmosphere. Signs are everywhere pointing the way. It is located on the 2nd floor but there is an elevator, so that is nice. Outdoor seating if you want but it was raining so we decided to stay in.

It was not busy so we had the place to ourselves!  The music makes the mood fun and the restaurant is decorated nicely. The waitress was attentive and took my joking very well.

We ordered samples of the sangria flavors. I preferred the pineapple flavor.

Food came quickly and warm. I had the pork taco. The serving is small but the flavor is very good!  I enjoyed it. The taco shell was a little too tough and greasy for me.

I asked the waitress if we need to make reservations for lunch on weekdays and she said not Mon-Thurs because their busy time is for dinner and weekends. If you want to secure your table, you should probably make a reservation though.

Overall, I enjoyed it. The prices are reasonable. Interesting place to have a meal.

Rhonda  I had the Strawberry Salad.  It was made with arugula and spinach and had some crumbled cheese as well which was not in the description.  It was a mild cheese.   It had lots of cut strawberries more than any salad I have ever had.  The salad came with a strawberry cream dressing.  It was pink in color and on the thick side.  The taste was a little tangy, mild not overpowering.  All in all, I thought the serving size was great and the flavor delicious.

Kelly The sangria is was I was looking forward to trying. We ordered a sample of four. The flavors were Lavendar Lemonade, Pineapple, Cherry Red Wine, and Strawberry. My favorite was the pineapple. The others weren't as flavorful as I had hoped. I ordered the Caribbean Wrap which featured Jerk chicken, lettuce, pineapple mango salsa, and black beans wrap. I did have a bit of a bite but was not overpowering. It was served with a delicious spring side salad with mixed greens, apples, and cheese. The serving size was just right for lunch. I'd order this dish again.

We decided we would try a couple of desserts and ordered the Tres Leche cake and the Cheese and Guava Empanada. The Tres Leche cake was sweet, moist, and spongy just like it should be. The empanada was a delicious surprise. The guava gave it the sweetness it needed because the cheese didn't have that much flavor and was a bit tough, assuming because it was deep-fried. The crust was crispy and flaky.

Star rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ out of 5 - We gave the restaurant 4 stars because we weren't all 100% pleased with the food. But that being said, we would give it another try because we loved the atmosphere and the staff was superb. If you live in the area, we recommend trying The Sangria Bowl out for a change.

Cathy made this cute video, check it out!

Asparagus Facts and Recipes

Asparagus is now in season in Virginia. I happen to like asparagus, how about you? My preference is grilling it on our gas grill with some olive oil and salt/pepper. Oh so good!

Here are some fun facts about asparagus.

  1. Asparagus has been cultivated for 2,500 years and for almost 150 years in the United States.
  2. It takes three years from seed to harvest.
  3. California is among the top 3 states in asparagus production. Other states that produce bunches of asparagus include Washington and Michigan, while others produce very small quantities.
  4. Sea salt was the asparagus farmer’s original herbicide.
  5. White asparagus and green asparagus come from the same plant. Green asparagus gets its color from sunlight. When the plant breaks through the ground, the sun hits it, turning it green. For white asparagus, sunlight is prevented from touching the plant by piling dirt on top of the stalks so the asparagus matures underground. Once the tip breaks through the surface, the stalk is cut with a special knife beneath the ground.
  6. Asparagus treats bee stings and toothaches. According to the Greeks and Romans 2,500 years ago, that is. Green vegetables are always an excellent choice for oral health but the jury is still out on that one.
  7. Asparagus makes your urine stink but only some people can actually smell it. Genetic differences occur in olfactory receptors that lead some people to be able to smell these odorous compounds released in urine. Asparagus contains asparagusic acid. When the vegetable is digested, this chemical is broken down into a group of related sulfur-containing and ammonia compounds.
  8. Asparagus will reproduce for up to 20 consecutive years! Asparagus is a perennial and will continue to produce yearly but patience is key. It takes about 3 years to grow asparagus before you can harvest it.
  9. Asparagus is a vegetable that is high in nutrients. Asparagus has many health benefits as it is high in fiber, folate, vitamins A, C, E, K, and chromium. Whether you're monitoring your sugar levels, asparagus is good news. It is abundant in the amino acid asparagine, which acts as a natural diuretic, and higher urinating allows the body to get rid of extra salts while also releasing fluid.
  10. Asparagus can be found in three colors: green, white, and purple.
Did you know these facts about asparagus? It’s amazing how we take our vegetables for granted.
