Fork in the Alley Review

One of the restaurants we visited on our Sisters Weekend in Roanoke, Virginia was The Fork in the Alley. Cool little spot for lunch or dinner. Although, it's not easy to find because it’s tucked into an alley next to a 7-11 and isn't where you would expect a restaurant. It's nestled on Crystal Spring Ave. in Roanoke.

Fork in the Alley
We arrived there mid-afternoon on a Saturday and it was busy. There isn’t a ton of parking as the only parking is along the street. We had to go around the block just to find the FITA but we did and found a parking space fairly close. The ambience is quirky and fun. We were seated fairly quickly. The menu is pretty basic. We decided to order a Hawaiian Brick Oven Pizza. It was big and tasty. Our waitress was attentive and kind.

All in all a good restaurant to visit and would probably go again when I'm in Roanoke just to try their burgers.
This bench is outside the restaurant and if you look close you can see their logo.

When I'm an old lady poem by Joanne Bailey Baxter

When I'm an old lady
© 1991 Joanne Bailey Baxter

When I'm an old lady, I'll live with my kids,
And make their life happy and filled with such fun.
I want to pay back all the joy they've provided.
Returning each deed! Oh, they'll be so excited!

When I'm an old lady and live with my kids

I'll write on the wall with reds, whites, and blues,
And I'll bounce on the furniture wearing my shoes.
I'll drink from the carton and then leave it out.
I'll stuff all the toilets and oh, how they'll shout!

When I'm an old lady and live with my kids

When they're on the phone and just out of reach,
I'll get into things like sugar and bleach.
Oh, they'll snap their fingers and then shake their head,
and when that is done I'll hide under the bed.

When I'm an old lady and live with my kids

When they cook dinner and call me to meals,
I'll not eat my green beans or salads congealed.
I'll gag on my okra, spill milk on the table,
And when they get angry, I'll run as fast as I'm able!

When I'm an old lady and live with my kids

I'll sit close to the TV, through the channels I'll click,
I'll cross both eyes just to see if they stick.
I'll take off my socks and throw one away,
And play in the mud 'til the end of the day!

When I'm an old lady and live with my kids

And later in bed, I'll lay back and sigh,
I'll thank God in prayer and then close my eyes.
My kids will look down with a smile slowly creeping,
And say with a groan, "She's so sweet when she's sleeping!"

God Bless All Moms and Grandmas Everywhere!

Keep it Sassy,
Cathy

Reach for the STAR --- Roanoke, VA !!

Another of our stops on our

2015 Sassy Silver Sisters vacation

was the

 STAR !!

On Saturday we tried to find the STAR and thought for sure it was an easy little trip because we could see it !
Well, we tried and tried and up the mountain we went -- to a private residence -- oh my !!
Down the mountain and decided we may want to get directions. DUH!
So our friend Charlie ( concierge in the executive lounge of  Roanoke Hotel & Conference Center http://www.hotelroanoke.com/ ) told us how easy it was. I told him we tend to do things backwards and he gave us directions with a map and everything !

Thanks again , Charlie !

Sunday we went to the star first thing ! YES,  it was easy to get to with proper directions.
Beautiful view -- sooo beautiful !!
You have to go when you are in the area .

Cathy Wants To Know --- Who Remembers The Waltons??

The Sassy Silver Sisters went on our yearly road trip and on the way to Roanoke we decided to stop and visit Walton's Mountain.

Go to Schuyler, Virginia, to tour the actual home place that inspired the beloved television series.

First is the store -- soooo cool -- lots of autographed books! The clerk was actually a relative of Earl Hamner and knew a lot of real information about how his family was portrayed in the Walton's TV show.

I bought a Goodnight John Boy coffee mug !!

                                                                    Circa 1942
The Walton's Mountain Country Store B and B was known as Walker’s Store
back in thee old days because it was operated by Willie Walker,
the son of Schuyler Walker head of one of the earliest families to settle
in the area who gave it the name of Schuyler.
For many years the store was vacant and seeking escape from that multitude
of brothers and sisters as a teenager I used to hideout there
for the solitude I needed in which to write.

We walked over to the family home of Earl Hamner.

My understanding is the home was purchased and rehabbed to it's former glory. The furnishings were replaced as well.

We walked  over to the church ----

Beautiful church !!

After that we headed up the road to the old school which has been converted to a museum ---

WALTON'S MOUNTAIN MUSEUM is located in the Piedmont Region foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Schuyler (Sky-ler), Virginia. Opened on October 16, 1992, this building was Schuyler's ca.1924 high & elementary school until 1955, grade school until 1991, and it is now our community center. "The Waltons" creator and John-Boy's alterego, Earl Hamner, grew up in the home across the street. WMM attracted as many as 90,000 guests in a year from all 50 states and 20 foreign countries!

It was fun -- saw a lot of things to point at and say I REMEMBER THAT.
We had a wonderful time going through each room !
A video was also playing every 1/2 hour or so.

I hope you can find time to visit this area ! You won't regret it !

SSS stay at Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center

Our annual sisters weekend has come and gone. It really wasn't long enough but we all had to get back to work and our homes.

We decided to go to Roanoke because one of us, Cathy, HAD to go to Black Dog Salvage. If you aren't familiar with them, they have a TV show on the DIY network. More to come on that visit, STAY TUNED.

My job was to review the hotel. Upon entering the parking lot, all I could say was WOW!! What a majestic building. Just look at it!

We were greeted by a gracious young lady at the front desk where she checked us in and treated us to the delicious chocolate chip cookies DoubleTree is famous for. We also received a coffee mug featuring the Black Dog Salvage for signing up for the tour, of course, Cathy took the mug ;)
Our room was nice with 2 double beds, flat screen TV, a desk , a coffee bar and FREE Wi-Fi. Our room had a view of the front entrance where we witnessed, one evening, a young couple receiving their send off in a Rolls Royce after their wedding. That was a nice surprise.

We were given access to the Executive Lounge for the continental breakfast and appetizers in the evening. We made our way there Friday evening and happen to be the most obnoxious people in the room. Go figure, right? You had to be there. Anyway, the concierge was an older gentlemen, Charlie, that was happy to serve us and thought we had the whole room laughing. I think he was being nice but he seemed to delight in the fact we came back to the lounge on Saturday evening. He wanted our email address so he could correspond with the SSS. He actually sent us a funny video to watch. He was awesome!! Everyone treated us like the royalty we think we are (hehe).

It was a grand hotel, here's a link for more information Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center

Cathy had T-shirts made for us. Thank you Cathy!! So here were are...

How long does it take to open a bottle of wine? Oh, about 20 minutes. I had bought a bottle of Middle Sister Wine to share on our trip. I used a corkscrew but wasn't strong enough to get it out. We eventually all tried to get that dang cork out of the bottle and succeeded, FINALLY. Sweet & Sassy like the bottle said, it was DELICIOUS! We didn't drink the whole bottle. WHAT? Yep that's right we didn't but Rhonda took the rest home, just because it has Middle Sister on the bottle she thought she should take it home.

Well, that's all I have for now. I will be reviewing, later on,  the Fork in the Alley, a restaurant we had lunch. And there will be more reviews on other things we did on our trip.

Until next time!!
Kelly, the Youngest Sister <><
