Let's Talk About the Thyroid

January is known as Thyroid Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to the importance of thyroid health and educate people about thyroid-related disorders.

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and producing hormones that affect almost every cell in the body. Thyroid disorders occur when the thyroid gland is either overactive or underactive, causing a range of symptoms that can significantly impact a person's quality of life. Common thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid nodules. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and depression. Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is a condition where the thyroid gland produces an excess of hormones, resulting in symptoms like weight loss, rapid heart rate, and anxiety. Thyroid nodules are lumps or growths on the thyroid gland, which can be either benign or cancerous. These disorders can affect people of all ages, but they are more common in women and those over the age of 60. While the exact causes of thyroid disorders are not fully understood, genetics, autoimmune diseases, and iodine deficiency are believed to play a role. It is crucial to raise awareness about thyroid health because thyroid disorders can often go undiagnosed, leading to long-term health complications. During Thyroid Awareness Month, organizations and healthcare professionals aim to spread awareness about the signs and symptoms of thyroid disorders, as well as the importance of early detection and treatment. By educating the public, we can improve the lives of those living with thyroid disorders and work towards better overall thyroid health for all.

I've been diagnosed with a hypothyroid and have been managing it for the past several years. It was a shocking diagnosis at first, but I have come to understand and accept my condition. For me, the most challenging aspect of hypothyroidism has been the weight gain, brain fog, and feeling sluggish.  Also I noticed my body temperature had dropped by a degree. However, with proper medication and lifestyle changes, I have been able to manage my symptoms and live a fulfilling life. With the support of my loved ones and a great doctor, I have been able to successfully manage my hypothyroidism and live a fulfilling life. I hope that by sharing my story, I can raise awareness about this condition and inspire others to take charge of their health and never give up on their journey to wellness.

How can you check your thyroid? Perform a thyroid neck check, stand in front of a mirror, and tilt your head back slightly. Take a sip of water and swallow. As you swallow, observe your neck for any protrusions or bumps that may appear. Next, gently run your fingers along the base of your neck, just above your collarbone. You should feel a small, soft bump known as the Adam's apple. If you notice any lumps or bumps that are not normally there, it could be a sign of an enlarged thyroid gland, also known as a goiter.

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck that may seem insignificant, but it plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of our bodies. Despite its small size, the thyroid has a major impact on various bodily functions, including metabolism, growth and development, body temperature regulation, and more.

The thyroid can have hundreds of possible symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms, I suggest you talk with your doctor.

Believe it or not, it's estimated that over 20 million Americans have thyroid dysfunction, yet at least half of these cases are undiagnosed and, consequently, untreated. When my hubby was diagnosed, he had visited numerous doctors, and one doctor sent him to a cardiologist.  It wasn't until we visited an internal medicine doctor who specialized in thyroid issues (we didn't know this at the time) that he finally found some answers. After a series of blood tests and thorough examinations, it was confirmed that he had an underactive thyroid. This explained all of his symptoms and gave him a sense of relief to finally have a diagnosis. With the help of medication, he was able to regulate his thyroid levels, and slowly but surely, his symptoms started to improve. He no longer felt exhausted all the time and was able to lose the extra weight he had been carrying around. It was a long journey, but he was grateful to have finally found the right doctor and treatment to help him feel better.

Cathy has her own story about her diagnosis. One of her doctors said it was menopause. She knew better and finally, after testing she also was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid.

I know many folks that are dealing with a thyroid problem and I'm sure you do too. Early detection and proper management can greatly improve the quality of life for those with a thyroid disorder. It is also important for the general public to understand the impact of thyroid disorders and to show support and understanding for those who are dealing with them. By raising awareness and promoting education about thyroid health, we can help those who are struggling with this condition and contribute to a healthier society overall.

Do you struggle with a thyroid problem? We'd love to hear from you. Comment below.

Mistakes We Make While Wearing Face Masks

Quilted Mask made by KellyJo Designs

I don't know about you, but when I'm out an about where there are people close, I wear a mask. I believe this is going to be the way of life for some time to come. I also believe that staying healthy is a priority in my life and I would want to know how to handle wearing a mask the proper way when out in public.

Here are a few mistakes made while wearing a mask and how to prevent them:
  1. Putting it on and taking it off incorrectly is a biggie. Remember to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before handling your mask after being in a public place. It's all about hygiene folks. Better safe than sorry. When taking your mask off, make sure you handle the mask by the ear loops or ties.
  2. Wearing it the wrong way. If your mask has pleats, they go on the outside, and the folded edge should be on the bottom. The mask should fit snugly, covering your nose and mouth completely without gaps but still allowing you to breathe naturally, according to the CDC. The sides of the mask should extend at least an inch past each corner of your mouth, and the bottom should wrap under your chin, which serves as an anchor.
  3. Putting it on too late. Many people put on their masks as they enter a grocery store or other essential business, but that may be too late because unforeseen interactions can occur earlier. Ideally, you should put on your mask before you step out of your front door. If you live in an apartment, that’s especially important, noting that elevators and stairwells can be especially germy. I live in a house where neighbors aren't so close, so typically I don't put it on until right before getting out my car.
  4. Contaminating It. Stop touching your face. Really. I must admit I fiddle with my mask while wearing it and I shouldn't be doing that because I'm contaminating the mask with my hands. The nose, mouth and eyes are the main way we get the virus. I need to be more aware and have a bottle a hand sanitizer on me all the time so if I have to touch my mask, I'll be prepared.
  5. Not Washing Your Mask. If you wear a cloth mask frequently, it’s best to wash it every time you wear it. Use detergent in the hottest water the fabric can withstand. This is not the time to think about brightening the colors. Heat definitely kill s germs. One way we've been sterilizing our masks is by hanging them over the rearview mirror. It's been hot lately and the sun definitely cooks things. Not sure it's the best way but God gave us the sun and I'm gonna use it :)
  6. Wearing it for the Wrong Reason. Wearing a mask in public is not so much protecting you as it’s protecting others around you in that six feet of space. A growing body of research suggests the novel coronavirus is likely spread by people who don’t show symptoms. That could even be you. And that’s the most important reason to wear a mask.
I hope this helps in your journey to staying healthy during the coronavirus pandemic and praying that you stay safe and healthy always!!

Love and best wishes,
Kelly

DoTerra On Guard - A must have for your household

Rhonda would like to share you with her love for DoTerra Oils.

I manage my husband’s two businesses.  In my spare time I am a DoTerra Advocate.  I love the DoTerra oils and other products they offer such as diffusers, beauty and skin products, dietary supplements and more.
I would like to tell you about one of my favorite products, On Guard oil.  This oil comes in a 15 ml bottle.  It is a blend made up of Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Leaf and Rosemary Leaf/Flower essential oils.  It smells GREAT!

On Guard can be used aromatically, topically and internally.  I use it aromatically in a diffuser to help kill germs in my office and home, especially during the winter months when all kinds of sickness are going around.   I also put some in a misting bottle with water to use has a room disinfectant and deodorizer.

I also use it topically on my feet to help bust my immune system.  DoTerra has made it easy to do this by making the On Guard Touch which is a 10 mL roll-on bottle.  This has Fractionated Coconut Oil added to the blend.  With this roll on you can apply it directly to the skin.  I usually put oils on my feet.

Then there is the On Guard Sanitizing Mist which comes in a 0.9 ounce spray bottle.  It is infused with moisturizing apple extract.  It kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria.  This product is great to have in your purse, backpack or car for when there is no soap and water to wash your hands.

These are just three of the On Guard products DoTerra has to offer.  There are more and if you would like to learn more about the products email me at BylerEssentials@aol.com .

Sassy Silver Sisters Helping Women Around the World Fundraiser

Please join us as we raise money,  through Samaritan's Purse, for women in poor communities and remote villages that lack access to basic health and obstetric care. Women, especially single mothers, also struggle to provide for their newborns and children because they have little education or job skills. Some women are so desperate for work they illegally cross country borders for jobs that pay little and come with verbal or physical abuse.

In return, if together we reach our goal of $2000, the Sassy Silver Sisters will take pies to the face and video tape it for your enjoyment. I’m sure you would just love to see us take it for women around the world.
