Easy DIY Fire Starters

We love our fire pit and use it year-round. My husband has become a great fire starter but we found out that having a little help makes it less work to get the fire going.

I’ve been making these fire starter rolls for a couple of years now and they’re super easy and cost little to nothing to make.

Materials you need:

  • Cardboard tubes
  • Dryer Lint
  • Cookie Tin
  • Candles
  • Wax paper
  • Empty can or a wax pouring pot
  • Essential oils, if you desire
  • Pan with water
  • Potholder

Instructions:

  1. Create a double boiler by placing the empty can or pot in the pan with water. Make sure the can is clean and dry.
  2. Place the candle into the can/pot.

  3. Heat the water to melt the candle wax.
  4. Drop a few drops of essential oils in the hot wax and stir. (Below are some essential oils you may use if you would like to keep the mosquitos away.)

  5. Line the bottom of the tin with wax paper. Stand the cardboard tubes up on the end in the cookie tin.

  6. Stuff some lint into each tube. Leave a bit of room to tuck the wax paper in.

  7. Carefully pour the melted candle wax into each tube.

  8. Let the wax harden. Turn the tubes over and add wax.
  9. Remove the tubes from the tin.
  10. Wrap the tubes with wax paper and twist/fold the ends towards the lint.

  11. Use one fire starter log to start a campfire.

There are several essential oils that can be used to repel mosquitoes and are effective insect deterrents suitable for fire pits, fireplaces, wood stoves, and campfires.

  • Citronella essential oil
  • Eucalyptus essential oil
  • Peppermint essential oil
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Cedarwood essential oil

Essential Oil Blend For Menstrual Cramps

I confess that I'm WAY past the childbearing years but our daughters are in that time of life. I do remember having menstrual pain and taking meds for relief but I wished I had a more natural way to help me.

My daughter's time of the month is excruciatingly painful and it really keeps her down from living a fulfilled life. So I did a little research to try and help her and found this EO blend that she could rub on her abdomen. Just maybe it would help. Sure enough, she said it cut the time she was in pain by half. I thought that was good news and had to share it with those that may need some help.

Here are some of the oils that help with menstrual cramps:

  • Cinnamon Oil
  • Clove oil
  • Lavender oil
  • Rose Oil
Let's take a closer look at why these oils are a benefit.

CINNAMON OIL
-
Cinnamon is already known as an effective, anti-inflammatory spice. So, it’s no surprise that cinnamon oil also fights inflammation and reduces menstrual pain.

In fact, a 2013 study looked at the effects of an essential oil massage versus a basic massage on period pain. The test group received daily massages using a blend of cinnamon, clove, and lavender oils (mixed into almond oil). The placebo group received daily massages with almond oil only.

The study revealed that:

“the level and duration of menstrual pain and the amount of menstrual bleeding were significantly lower in the aromatherapy group than in the placebo group.” (source)

CLOVE OIL - Similar to cinnamon, clove oil is also a well-known anti-inflammatory oil. One reason why clove oil is thought to be effective at reducing menstrual cramps is because it contains beta-caryophyllene and eugenol.

Beta-caryophyllene is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound, found in other infamous, pain-relieving plants: cannabis and hemp.

ROSE OIL - Don’t be fooled by the soft and delicate rose oil because it packs a punch when it comes to fighting pain!

Another study has also compared the effectiveness of rose oil and the prescription pain med, diclofenac sodium.

In that study:

  • One group of participants was treated with diclofenac sodium only.
  • Another group was treated with diclofenac sodium, plus 2% rose essential oil.

The results showed that the group that was treated with rose oil had stronger improvements in pain levels, compared to the group that was treated with pain meds only (source).

So, whether you use rose oil in a pure essential oil blend, or you use it along with pain meds, rose oil comes with some serious pain-reducing properties.

LAVENDER OILLavender doesn’t just soothe the mind. It also soothes aches and pains.

A 2012 study combined lavender oil with clary sage and marjoram oils, in a 3% blend:

  • Study participants massaged the blend onto the lower belly every day from the end of their last cycle, until the start of their next cycle.
  • Participants were asked to evaluate their pain, both before and after the treatment.
The study concluded that there was a significant reduction in pain after just one menstrual cycle (source).

Doing a massage with lavender only has also been shown to relieve cramps. You can also get relief by inhaling lavender oil.

Science has shown that breathing in lavender oil all by itself is also effective at reducing period pain. Lavender oil contains beta-caryophyllene. This is the same compound found in clove (though the levels in lavender are lower).

The presence of this compound is likely one reason why lavender works so well at reducing period pain.

This is the recipe I used for my daughter:

Spice Period Relief Blend

Ingredients

How to Make

  1. Pour the almond oil into the glass bottle. Allow a little space for the essential oils.
  2. Add the essential oil drops to the bottle.
  3. Seal the bottle and shake vigorously to blend the ingredients.
  4. Massage onto the abdomen or lower back.
Thanks to LiveWellZone.com for the information.

If you know someone who struggles with menstrual cramps, please send them this information. If it worked for my daughter then it just might work for someone you know.

Kelly

De-skunking Our Dog and Home

***UPDATED 9/2/23***

Recently my dog had an encounter with a skunk. YES, a skunk. He went out for his 5 a.m. morning pee break and came back in before we knew he was sprayed by a skunk and headed directly to our grandson's room, luckily our grandson wasn't in there and rubbed his face all over his bed. Not knowing that my husband was dealing with this, he decided to wake me up after he had already given him his first bath. We bathed him 3 times that morning and took him to the groomers mid-afternoon.

For the second bath, I did a little research on what to bathe him in and found a homemade solution from The Prairie Homestead, which worked a bit but didn't do the trick that I would have liked.

Here's the recipe if you are interested in DIY:

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (this is the kind you find in the first aid section of your average grocery store. It’s very cheap.)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1-2 drops of liquid dish soap (optional)
  • 2-3 drops of lemon essential oil (optional–but adds extra deodorizing power)
  • Rubber Gloves (optional, but highly recommended…)
  • Bucket

Make sure you wear gloves! Mix together the peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap. Stir well and then quickly apply to the dry dog, being careful not to splash any in his eyes. Thoroughly work the solution in his coat. It should cover and permeate as much of the hair as possible.

Allow the dog to “soak” for around 5 minutes.

A chemical reaction is occurring which actually neutralizes the odor. This is why you must use it before the peroxide and soda are finished with their reaction. It can not be made ahead of time and stored.

After the waiting period, thoroughly rinse the dog with water.

For the third bath, I took a trip to PetSmart and found this product Nature's Miracle® Skunk Odor Remover. It did take more of the smell away from the dog and it worked rather well on clothing and our carpets. This particular bottle has a lavender scent. Follow the instructions on the bottle.

I put this in a spray bottle and sprayed the house with it and it did help temporarily. I added it to my shampooer and shampooed my rugs. I do believe that helps a lot.

I also found a DIY to try and neutralize the smell in the house from Simply Earth using essential oils and a diffuser. It makes the home smell wonderful. I didn't have the Lemon Eucalyptus or the Blood Orange essential oil so I substituted it with Lemon, Eucalyptus, and a Citrus blend.

Defeat the Reek Diffuser Blend Recipe

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Add essential oils to the diffuser and diffuse in an open room.
  • To make a masterblend of this recipe use a 5 mL bottle from your Big Bonus Box and add 25 drops of Clove Essential Oil, 25 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil, and 50 Blood Orange Essential Oil. Shake to mix and label.

We can still smell the skunk on his face after a week but the house smells so much better now.
Another thing to consider when opening windows, make sure you don't open the windows that are near the spray spot. We found out the hard way and we couldn't figure out why it kept smelling like a skunk in our bedroom and determined the skunk sprayed our dog near our bedroom window. Live and learn! :)

I hope and pray you never encounter a skunk but if you or your pet get sprayed just maybe these tips will help you on your journey to de-skunking :)

If you have helpful tips on this subject, we would be glad to hear from you. Please comment!

Stay safe and healthy,

DIY Bath Steamers - Cathy tries and fails!

I wanted to try the DIY Bath Steamers from the Hallmark Channel Home and Family. I tried and failed.😏 But I had fun trying and will try again. You live and learn by failing, right??

Here's the materials list and directions if you'd like to take a stab at making these cute bath steamers:

MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Place the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch in a large bowl. Use a pastry cutter or large whisk to remove lumps and mix well.
  2. Add the water SLOWLY, 1 tbsp at a time. You have to be very careful because if you add too much water too soon, the whole thing will fizz up. Just be patient and keep testing by grabbing a handful of the mixture and squeezing it in your hand. As soon as it feels like damp sand (that would be perfect for making a sandcastle), you've added enough water.
  3. Add the essential oils, and after every few drops, use your pastry cutter or a fork to mash them into the mixture.
  4. Place about 2 tbsp of mixture into each dome, and use the back of a spoon or ice cream scoop to press down and smooth.
  5. Leave overnight.
  6. Carefully remove from molds and package in a pretty Mason jar or clear gift bag with ribbons and decorations etc.
  7. To Store: They will store for up to 6 months in a cool, dark cabinet.
DIRECTIONS
Take into the shower with you, wet it under the stream of water to get it going. Place the steamer at the far end of the bath/shower stall. You want it to last, and if it's under the stream of water it will disappear too quickly.
Caution: Because you are bringing oils into the shower, make sure you use a shower mat, and wipe out the shower floor when you are done.

If you are interested in good quality essential oils, contact Rhonda
Byler Essentials , she would be more happy to help you.

Have you every tried to make bath bombs or steamers? If so, please let us know your tricks of the trade and maybe your favorite scents.

Take care!!

Walmart Fall Beauty Box Unboxing 2019-20

Hey everyone! It's been a few weeks since we last posted. We are going to TRY to be more consistent with Monday being the day we push out our blog posts. So on that note, we are going to be chatting about the Walmart Fall Beauty Box.

Kelly has a few box subscriptions and Walmart Beauty Box is one of them. It is a quarterly box and costs $5 which includes shipping. It's suppose to be the FALL beauty box but she received it in the mail in December, which was a little annoying because fall is over and winters begins. The box usually includes a full size product but most of the products are sample or travel size.

The first thing you see when you open the box is a square white paper giving you a little insight on what you can expect in the box "FALL FAVES". On the other side of the paper they give you the opportunity to enter to win a $100 gift card if you take a survey on the box. It's worth a try, who doesn't want to win $100?

We opened the tissue paper and the first product was a BIC Soleil Sensitive Razor. This is a great product and full size. Do you use a particular brand razor? If so please do tell.

Next was a travel size DOVE Antiperspirant  Deodorant Dry Spray. Kelly loves their deodorant and uses this particular dry spray daily. You don't have to use it daily as it's a 48 hour spray. Guess you would have to try it for yourself to see if you would need to use it daily. This is a 1 oz. spray can and would be a bonus for traveling.

The next product we pulled out was My Magic Mud Activated Charcoal Toothpaste with peppermint flavor. Do you want whiter teeth? Who doesn't?! My Magic Mud products are naturally formulated with the highest quality ingredients and backed by scientific analysis and clinical trials. It's suppose to polish and whiten teeth, removes plaque & freshens breath. Have you every tried activated charcoal toothpaste? If so, how'd it work for you?

We pulled out the next product which was a sample of NIVEA Coconut & Monoi Infused Body Lotion. These samples are an awesome way to try products also to stuff in an overnight bag. A full size product is 16.9 oz. and in a pump bottle.  It's formulated for dry and normal skin with fast absorption and none greasy.

Purely Inspired Collagen Peptides sample was the next product we pulled out of the box. Since your body’s collagen production declines as you age and you need adequate collagen for strong bones, joints, and skin, adding more collagen to your diet sounds like a no-brainer for us in our golden years. Instructions: Options to Enjoy: Odorless and unflavored, Purely Inspired Peptides are easy to mix in any drink or food. Water: Add 1 scoop to hot or cold water or juice. Smoothies: Mix 1 scoop of collagen peptides and 1 scoop of Pure Inspired Organic Protein. Oatmeal: Stir into oatmeal or a breakfast cereal. Cooking: Add 1 scoop to hot or cold recipes. Mix 1 serving (1 scoop) with 8 oz of water or beverage of choice and take once daily. Read the entire label before use and follow directions provided.

Do you take a collagen peptide supplement? What brand do you use and have you experienced a difference? Let us know.

The last product was a full size liquid lipstick NYX Professional Makeup Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipstick, Cheekies & the color is Lipli16. The following comes from the Walmart website, "When in doubt, go nude. Get ready to slip into something seductive with NYX Professional Makeup's Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipstick, a weightless liquid lipstick with a plush matte finish. The best way to describe both lingerie and Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipsticks: silky, light and mostly nude. But unlike lingerie, these matte liquid lipsticks will stay on for a long time. Its long-lasting and no-smudge formula delivers lightweight and all-over luscious color." This product sounds sexy so it's definitely going to be used. Do you have a favorite lipstick or lip gloss? Please tell.

All in all we were pleased with the box. The items will definitely be used and worth $5.

If you'd like to see us unbox this Walmart Beauty box, we did a LIVE Facebook stream on January 16, 2020 where we chatted up a storm and opened up the box. The unboxing starts around 4:16.

We've added our YouTube video link to the unboxing.

It's easy to subscribe to the quarterly box, just click on this link Walmart Beauty Box and you too can enjoy new products.

Do you have a box subscription? We'd love to know and chat with you. Just comment below and let's have a conversation.
