Let's Celebrate National Bake Week

Get your aprons ready and preheat the oven, because it's time to celebrate National Bake Week in style! Baking has been an integral part of human history, with evidence of bread-making dating back to ancient civilizations. It is a skill that has been passed down through generations, with each culture adding its own unique flavors and techniques. From savory pies to decadent pastries, baking is a form of art that brings people together and creates delicious treats for all to enjoy.

To celebrate the love of baking, National Bake Week was established. This annual event takes place during the first full week of April (in the USA), and it is a time to honor the tradition of baking and all the joys it brings. In this article, we will delve into the history and significance of National Bake Week and why it is worth celebrating.

History of National Bake Week

National Bake Week was first celebrated in the United Kingdom in 2007, organized by the National Association of Master Bakers. The aim was to promote and celebrate the art of baking and to raise awareness of the bakers and confectioners who devote their lives to this craft. It was an instant hit, and soon other countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, adopted the tradition.

Why is it celebrated?

National Bake Week is not just about indulging in delicious treats but also about recognizing the important role that baking plays in our lives. It is a time to appreciate the hard work and dedication of bakers and to support local businesses and bakeries. It is also an opportunity to gather with friends and family, share recipes, and create new memories together.

Baking is a labor of love. It requires patience, precision, and a lot of trial and error. The end result is not just a delicious treat but also a sense of accomplishment and pride. National Bake Week celebrates this sense of achievement and encourages people to try their hand at baking, whether they are a seasoned pro or a novice.

Benefits of baking

Apart from the obvious joy of indulging in baked goods, baking also has numerous benefits for our mental and emotional well-being. The process of baking can be therapeutic, providing a sense of calm and focus. It also allows for creativity and self-expression, as bakers can experiment with different flavors and techniques. Baking can also be a wonderful way to bond with loved ones, as it brings people together and creates a sense of community.

Moreover, baking from scratch allows for control over the ingredients used, making it a healthier option than store-bought treats. It is also a great way to teach children about food, measurements, and following instructions.

How to celebrate National Bake Week

There are countless ways to celebrate National Bake Week, and it all depends on your personal preferences. You can try your hand at a new recipe, bake with friends or family, or visit your local bakery to support small businesses. You can also share your creations on social media using the hashtag #NationalBakeWeek or participate in baking competitions and events in your community.

A Tribute for our Mother’s 90th Birthday

January 3rd marks a very special occasion as we come together to celebrate the 90th birthday of our beloved mother, Mama Sassy. It is a milestone that is truly worth celebrating, as it is a testament to the strength, resilience, and love that she has embodied throughout her life. As we reflect on the incredible journey that our mother has taken, we are filled with gratitude for all the sacrifices she has made for our family.

Our mother has always been the heart and soul of our family. She has been the pillar of strength that has held us all together through the highs and lows of life. Her unwavering love and support have been our constant source of inspiration and motivation. We have watched her handle every challenge with grace and determination, and her faith in God has taught us the power of resilience and perseverance.

Our mother has also been the epitome of selflessness. She has always put the needs of her family above her own, never once complaining or seeking recognition for all that she does. She has been a source of love, comfort, and guidance, always there to listen and offer her wise words of advice. We are forever grateful for the sacrifices she has made to ensure that we have a happy and fulfilling life.

As we celebrate her 90th birthday, we are reminded of all the wonderful memories and moments that we have shared with our mother. From her delicious home-cooked meals, New England Boiled Dinner, and Whoopie Pies, to her warm hugs and infectious laughter, she has filled our lives with so much joy and love. Her kind and nurturing spirit has touched the lives of everyone she has met, and her legacy will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Born in a time of great change and turmoil, our mother witnessed the world go through significant events and transformations. She lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and countless other historical moments that shaped the world we know today. She experienced firsthand the struggles and hardships that came with those times, but also the strength and determination that allowed her to overcome them.

Our mother was born in a small town in Maine in the early 1930s, a time when life was much simpler and slower-paced. She often talks about her childhood, filled with memories of playing outside with her siblings and friends and going to the local schoolhouse. She recently told everyone that she truly lived off the grid growing up in Maine. ☺

As a young person, she always had a passion for sports and music. She excelled in basketball and even played on her high school team. She learned to play the guitar, the piano and enjoys singing. Working a job at a local soda counter, she loved being able to interact with customers and make their favorite drinks.

But her life took a dramatic turn when she made the decision to join the US Marine Corps. It was a bold move for a young woman at that time, but she was determined to serve her country and make a difference. She went through rigorous training and emerged as a strong and capable Marine.

Stationed in North Carolina, she was assigned to work as a staff office stenographer and recorded court material by shorthand. Shortly after arriving at Camp Legeune, she met and married our father.

As a USMC wife, she faced a different set of challenges. She had to adapt to a constantly changing lifestyle, moving from one place to another every few years. But she embraced this lifestyle and made the most of it. She fell in love with the culture, the weather, and the beauty of Hawaii, where our father was stationed for a couple years. She also had the opportunity to travel to different states and experience different cultures, which broadened her perspective on life. She made long-time friends wherever the USMC would take them.

While on his last assignment at Quantico Marine Corps Base, our father retired from the USMC and settled in Virginia. But we would have never guessed it would be their last stop together.

Throughout her life, she has endured unimaginable pain and heartache. She has experienced the loss of not one, but three husbands, each one leaving a void in her life that can never be filled. The first was our father, Walter, who was taken too soon by a massive heart attack in his early 40's.

The second was Dan, whom she met at our church. They were married for 7 years and he also died of heart disease. During their marriage, she suffered the devastating loss of her 4th child, Terry (who had just graduated from high school) in a car accident.

After being a widow for 19 years, she married Clint, she called him Sweetie☺. They were married for 17 years.

Each time, she was left to pick up the pieces and carry on, holding on to her faith. She has learned to cherish the memories of her loved ones and find solace in the fact that they will always hold a special place in her heart. Her strength and resilience in the face of such tragedy is a testament to her steadfast spirit and love for those she has lost. Despite the hardships she has faced, she continues to carry on, a true example of courage and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Our mother also experienced the joys and challenges of motherhood, raising six children with love, patience, and strength. She always put her family first and made sure we had everything we needed to succeed. She taught us important values like kindness, compassion, and resilience, and we are forever grateful for the strong foundation she gave us.

As she entered her later years, our mother continued to embrace life with enthusiasm and grace. She opened a business, traveled, learned new skills, and stayed active in her community and church.

Her love for crocheting knows no bounds, as she has tirelessly created numerous hats for the homeless, and those in need. Currently, she’s embarked on a new endeavor, making baby blankets for a local pregnancy center.

Now, as we gather to celebrate her 90th birthday, we are in awe of all that our mother has accomplished and the impact she has had on our lives and the lives of so many others. Her unwavering love, support, and wisdom have shaped us into the people we are today, and we are forever grateful for her presence in our lives.

Happy 90th birthday, Mom – you are truly an incredible woman and the best mother anyone could ask for. May your life continue to be filled with love, happiness, and blessings. We love you more than words can express.

Your sassy daughters,
Cathy, Rhonda and Kelly

DIY Birthday Cake Boxes for People in Need

***UPDATED 1/27/24***

I stumbled upon this Birthday Cake Box for the needy on Pinterest and thought what a fabulous idea. It’s super quick & easy to make and donate to the food pantry/people in need.

The Dollar Tree and Walmart have the cake mixes and frosting for just over $1 and lots of paper products and inexpensive party supplies. For just under $10 you can make them for your local shelter or food pantry. Kids get a kick out of helping and it also makes a great service project for scout groups and church ministry groups.

Here's what you need to make a Birthday Cake Box:

  • 9x13 Disposable aluminum foil pan with a lid, it's helpful to have the lid for packaging and delivering purposes.
  • 1 box of cake mix, any flavor you like
  • 1 can of lemon-lime soda (in case the recipient doesn’t have eggs or oil)
  • Birthday candles
  • You can add birthday napkins, candles, a banner, etc.

  • Did you know that you can make a delicious cake out of nothing but a box of cake mix and a can of lemon-lime soda? When my granddaughter was little, her momma made her cake with soda because the precious little one had an egg allergy. You wouldn't have known there was no oil or eggs.

Not everyone may have eggs and oil on hand. It would be disappointing to get a birthday cake box but you didn’t have the other ingredients to make it? Adding a can of lemon-lime soda along with a little note giving simple instructions on how to make a cake, will make someone's day.

If they do have eggs & oil, the beverage is a bonus.🙂

  • You are welcome to print the instructions below to put on your Birthday Box.

  • PDF for you to print

We hope you enjoyed this blog post and may you be a blessing to someone in need too. Comments are appreciated.

    Keep it sassy,
    Kelly

July 4th 2017 - Let's Party!!! Drinkie Drinkie!!

***UPDATED 6/25/23***

It’s time for fireworks, hot dogs, flags and fun facts about our country and Independence Day. We girls also think it's time for some fun drinks!! Watch the video below and you'll understand what we're talking about.

The Fourth of July marks our country’s birthday. On this day in 1776, the members of the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, adopting the final draft of the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming our sovereignty from Great Britain.
There are many ways Americans commonly choose to celebrate this holiday – from family-friendly festivals, fireworks and parades to feasting on traditional foods like hot dogs and barbecue.

Here are 10 interesting things you may or may not already know about the 4th of July:
  1. Initially adopted by Congress on July 2, 1776, the revised version of the Declaration of Independence was not adopted until two days later.
  2. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on a "laptop," a kind of writing desk that could fit on one's lap.
  3. One of the United States patriotic songs, “Yankee Doodle” was originally sung by British military officers prior to the Revolution as a means to mock the disorganized American colonists who fought alongside them during the French and Indian Wars.
  4. To avoid cracking it, the Liberty Bell has not been rung since 1846. To mark the quintessential day, every fourth of July it is symbolically tapped 13 times.
  5. Americans consume about 155 million hot dogs on Independence Day alone; it is the biggest hot dog holiday of the year.
  6. The country’s 30th president, Calvin Coolidge, was born on Independence Day in 1872.
  7. In July 1776, the estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation was 2.5 million.  According to the U.S. and World Population Clock, the nation’s estimated population in July 2017 will be 325.3 million.
  8. Three U.S. Presidents, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe, died on July 4th; Adams and Jefferson died within hours of each other in 1826 while Monroe died in 1831.
  9. The “Star Spangled Banner” was written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812 and was not decreed as the official national anthem of the United States until 1931.
  10. In 1954, the words ‘under God’ were added to the Pledge of Allegiance.
How do you and your family celebrate the 4th of July? Have any additional fun historical facts to add?

Keep it sassy,
Kelly
